Found this interesting looking tree in a botanical garden & need some help with ID. I know it's not native to the area.

Unfortunately it was in a section that people aren't allowed to "trample" on. I know it's not the best photo for ID purposes,

but the bark seems pretty distinct to me... Hoping someone recognizes it enough to point me in the right direction.

Do you have another pic that shows more of the tree? The trunk looks like a crape myrtle, but I don't think that's what it is. (If the pic were from the South, I'd say it is a crape myrtle, though.)

It's not a Crape Myrtle. That tree I'd recognize in an instant -- as you can see the bark isn't reddish, it's rough & not smooth, and Crape Myrtles don't have this growth habit nor those deep grooves in the bark. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

It's the only shot I got, 'cause, as I said, it's in a restricted area of the garden and can really only be seen clearly enough for any kind of shot from one angle.

Well... of course, as soon as I post this I find a list from the Arbor Day order (or at least, I think it was that year's order). No idea which is which (which of the ones that came in this bundle actually survived), but could the third photo be a young Sargeant Crabapple? That's on the list, as is Eastern Redbud, Washington Hawthorn, dogwood (I know it's not that), Goldenraintree and crapemyrtle (I remember wondering why on earth they were shipping crapemyrtles to New England!!) In theory (meaning assuming they sent what they said they were sending), it should be one of those -- and the crabapple seems like the only one it could be? I'd be floored if they were shipping free Bradford pears (which is what someone on Name that Plant thought it was as well) -- aren't they considered more or less invasive plants in a lot of areas these days? So I'm hoping for Sargeant crabapple since I wouldn't mind having one of those for the birds (means the little guy can stay right where he is now, in the bird/butterfly garden).

Greenthumbz, those are gorgeous pics! I've heard that there are a couple of trees that are not native to North America but are used by significant numbers of native insects. 1) Malus/Crabapples - native, hybrid, or exotic, Douglas Tallamy's book stated that the leaf chemistry is so similar that North american insects will use all species. This certainly bears true in my experience. I've got lots of crabs, a few specimens and a crazy wild thicket full of them in back,and they are bird magnets, not just for the fruits in the fall but for the nectar and insects in spring and summer. 2) Picea abies/Norway spruce - don't have any personal experience, but was told this by an ornithology student at Cornell who was doing a study on the subject

Hi Have a couple on the above lists as well as a white form of the Royal poinciana or at least reputed to be has not flowered yet. Schizolobium parahyba, jury still out if it's "cool"lol. has grown more in the last year than the previous 5. Catches lizards in a sticky resin, which I can find no info about. Throws entire branches off at once with a loud popping sound.lol Breaks in 30 MPH winds. Thinking of removing it as can't imagine a tree that size in a hurricane . was hoping to see at least one flower before then. laurroxie Ever got the C roxburghii to flower?? Both it and th Schizy seem to have made it through the cold but look a bit ragged. I think both are "spring" flowers?? gary

Should I cut down this camphor tree?

I am really leaning toward removing the one in the front yard for sure, but the one in the back yard is so large it would definitely cost a pretty penny to have removed. So it will get a reprieve for now while I attack the Brazilian peppers trying to get a foothold back there. I do have some cardinals I see every year and I love those birds so I will consider planting a red bay should I remove the camphor in the back yard. I have never seen berries on the one in the front yard, maybe it takes a while for them to fruit? So I don't think the cardinals would mind if I removed that one. I kind of have my heart set on some sort of fruit tree for the front yard and I don't have much space anywhere else for a tree. The big camphor shares the back yard with a good sized loquat. I don't think any other tree could get enough sun back there. I guess I could put a red bay in the front and then when I can get the other camphor removed I can put my fruit tree in the back yard. The camphor takes up so much room that I might be able to get two fruit trees back there. I am a tree hugger and the idea of cutting down trees does bother me but I have seen what that darned punk tree has done to this state (and me, they really set off my asthma) and I don't want to contribute to helping another invasive tree. I do actually like the smell of the camphor but I don't think that's enough reason to keep it. Hey, I wonder if I could grow one bonsai size? ; ) Thanks for all the responses, You've given me some more to think about.

Is this a botanical garden in NYC? If not, where it is, or at least the zone, would be helpful.

I have the zone in the appropriate field ;) We're in zone 7, and yes, it's a botanical garden in New York City.

The problem is you didn't show the leaves. You should be able to find out what it is from the Garden anyway, botanical gardens are supposed to be telling people what they are displaying. They might have a place on their web site where you can make queries about the collections, or a phone number you can call for information about specific accessions. Looks like this one is prominently situated.

What I have seen here with a more or less similar trunk is Cydonia oblonga.

Now I'm noticing that what leaves and twigs can be seen at the top of the picture appear to be those of Poncirus trifoliata. I didn't bother to squint at them before.
