Well, the thing about Crepuscule is that you can put it on that and at some point, it will be too big, but at some point it is going to form hard wood that will serve as a trunk so it can support itself and will just sort of be holding up your trellis.

Honestly, I don't think it is. I think she could take down that trellis in just a couple of years. She's a big ole girl.

Alicia, I agree with Carol. Crepuscule will eat that trellis for breakfast! Mine is only three years old and took over half a deck.

well, I have 3 on trellises similar to this, but I can't see the trellises any longer and the plants have become woody and thick and just stand on their own but until they reached that point, the trellis stood as something for them to climb onto. Maybe the trellises are on the ground now, I don't know because the rose has so overtaken it and just seems to grow on its own. The trellis served a purpose until the rose bush got big enough to become a hulking mass of a bush alone.

Patricia, I know exactly what you are talking about! My Noella Nabannond was "grown" on an obelisk. Right now that obelisk has been picked up out of the ground and is tilted but she is such a massive thing that she has huge canes and seems to be supporting herself! Some of these ladies make a fine, self supporting huge bush when they are mature.

My Crepuscule has never grown very large. I originally had a Lady Hillingdon and a Crepuscule, and one died. I wonder if the tags got mixed up somehow. It looks like Crepuscule, but it grows like Lady H (not much). On the other hand, this may be the year that it leaps. I may sing a different song one day, but right now I'd say that your arch is too big!

Hmmm, must give this some thought.

I guess it depends on how much you value that trellis. A cheap rebar and hose clamp tee-pee may be the better option if you have a vigorous clone of the rose that would only use the trellis as a training device.

Thank you. I have been working to figure out what to use up there. I think I will use a nylon slip tie so that we can get it into position and then add the hose clamp.

Well, I don't really value the trellis, but I do want to be able to walk through there, so Crepescule will need to go somewhere else. Suggestions for a rose that would do well with a trellis that size?

What about Madame Driout? Mine has never gotten very big although Jean from Mississippi has a big one but hers is the only one I have ever seen get big. Then there is the beautiful Pele, which is classified as a HT but several people I know, including myself grow it as a small climber. You could put a couple clematis with it and it would be lovely. Jersey Cream is a favorite clematis that I have with Pele and Madame Driout.

The arbor I built I 7' tall, 36" deep and 42" across the opening. It seemed gigantic as I was making it and setting it in place. Now, just two years later, I regret making it so small.

I know! -- this trellis seems to be shrinking every second until now it seems toy-sized! After imagining us fighting our way through Crepescule (even if it thornless), it would seem prudent to plant it elsewhere, lol. Patricia I'm going to look into your suggestions today.
