Salix integra - Japanese Willow Dying

In 2006, we planted a Salix integra behind our garage. It was doing amazingly up until this year. Had a strange spring. Warm, then frozen, then rain, then freeze, then colder than normal temps. Half of it did not come back. I pruned back the dead branches to a foot tall. Slowly, more of it is dying. It's been dry. We're close to 10" below normal in rainfall. I have watered, trying to be careful not to overwater. Recently, while pruning back another dead branch, I discovered it to be hollow. I don't use chemicals near this shrub. Some of it is still seemingly strong and new growth is coming up from the base/pruned back dead branches, with exception of this recently discovered hollow trunk. I don't understand what could be happening. When pruning it back, I did replant some of the cuttings. Some did well for a while but then turned black and new growth shriveled up and died. What's happening to this beautiful shrub?
