Hello, Echo. It sounds like an interesting setup with the bubbler out of the rock and a top pond. Do you have pictures? You don't say what the pond lining is made from and you don't say anything about existing filtration. Both are important to know about when it comes to maintenance and algae control. Most of what I read here and in references would indicate there are too many nutrients in the water. Do you have a good test kit? Some of the references I looked at indicate a settling pond with lots of vegetation is a good bio-filter for a set-up such as yours. What is growing in that top pond? Sandy

I have no plants or fish in the pond. No filtration - should have been done from the first but we didn't know anything and our pond person didn't mention anything about such a thing. Last summer was the worst, didn't have many issues before and what little we did just added a little chemical and it was gone.
We have a 60 MIL liner and rocks. The split between for the bubbler and just into the pond is all hidden under the bubbler rock. We had to have enough water force to make the pond run nicely over the first waterfall and if we didn't do a splitter the bubbler would spray into the air to high... The rocks have been so lovely until this past summer. The pond was put in in 2004.

1.) Slow down; rushing and cutting corners got you to this place initially. Do some research/planning and do it right once (I'm doing a re-do because I rushed to get it done and didn't consult the local pond people (a local Koi Club).

If it were me (and I do not know your limitations/ location)
1. Get rid of the rocks - a gunk catcher and a nightmare to clean, especially with no bottom drain.
2. Include two retro-fit bottom drains, individual pipe to..
3. Settlement chamber (mechanical)
4. Skippy filter (bigger is better)(Biological)
5. UV unit - down the line it helps in the summer months especially.
6. If you have plants, go easy on the plant food (if you even use the stuff, I don't. My fish provided enough sh--.
