Gravel path construction on clay.

kpg

Hello -- will be building a gravel path across the front yard over the next couple (or 3 or 4) weekends. Will use 3/8" - 1/2" course stone. The base soil is pure, hard-to-drain clay and I'm wondering if I should dig the path down 2 to 3" and use a layer of 3/4" drainage rock (esp. since I would occasionally be using the path for wheelbarrows, etc.).

Many articles say for an informal path just spread a layer of gravel and replace/refresh every few years -- but I think the combo of clay and the intent of heavier traffic would favor a little more support underneath.

Any thoughts/opinions would be appreciated.

Thank you,
