Path of thin layer of fine gravel on compact clay

We're planning an informal path for our side yard to lead from the patio to the back of the garage. We were considering flagstone filled with bark or DG, only bark, or stepping stones with a filler between the stones.

I've seen several photos of paths that appear to be a very thin layer of crushed stone/granite on top of compacted soil -- similar to a well-worn hiking path. They look very natural, casual, easy to construct, and inexpensive. We would edge this path with field stones.

Our soil along this area is already very compacted after years of treading back and forth from the patio to the garage. We understand that a thin layer would allow more weeds, but it's easy to hoe the path and the rest of the side yard would be mulched in the planted beds.

It seems that a crushed granite with fines would work best for this use. Has anyone made a path like this with good long-term results? When we go to the materials yard, what should we ask for?
