Rio Samba and Betty Boop--Please Comment
Comments (10)Here's one of those situations where there is a difference of opinion. I love my Betty Boop. Sure her blooms are more colorful when they first open but I don't think that the older blooms are muddy or unattractive. The cool thing about her is that she self-deadheads. In other words, she continues to put out blooms even if you don't get out there and cut things back. She is in a south facing bed and she can get bs (what doesn't in my climate until July) and I don't spray but use a drench a couple of times and call it good. She is continually in bloom for me and people frequently stop and compliment me on her. Definitely one of my favorites. Good luck! Comments (9)Yes, Ray, I do regularly water, feed, spray and dead head all my roses and have done so for some years; but none has shown the same difficulties as the Rio Sambas, so I wonder if I overdid the pruning a while back, when I was fighting blackspot. The new growth is coming off of some tough old wood. Thank you, Mad Gallica, for suggesting RMV. I've not dealt with that before, and I will keep an eye out. But there seems at present no leaf problem except for a bit of blackspot, which I have trimmed off; and I spray the bushes with Mancozeb. It has been too hot lately to apply sulfur. If I could figure a way to add them to this post, I would send some pictures. The plants look very leggy....See MoreRio Samba and Scentimental
Comments (7)Thank you all for lookiing and commenting on my roses. The photos are not so good.I meant to go out and take some m ore of Rio Samba today,as the blooms wasn't fully open yesterday and today they have opened up and they are huge. Thanks Judy, I love the striped roses, just don't have many.I have a George Burns should have blooms very soon, and I have Rockin Robin which has very small little blooms, and its full of buds right now. Beth,Thank you.Won't be long I will have more blooms,at least inside the little fenced area where the deer can't get to them, but so far I am lucky they haven't ate up anything yet this spring.I just wish I could take beautiful photos like yours. Leslie,Thanks.I had not noticed that I had some daylilies in the photo, till you commented and I had to go look and see :).I have been so excited all weekend, with these two bushes with blooms, and yesterday I got a package in the mail that surprised me from a friend I met on daylily forum and she sent me 6 new daylilies, and one of them was one I had wanted so bad,but it was just too expensive for me to buy. When I seen it the tears started,I was so excited about it.Today I was outside m ost of the day planting them.Takes me forever to do things as I am not a spring chicken and have severe back problems to boot, but I am determined to work in my garden.Leslie, what new ones did you get? I love daylilies as well as my roses. Thanks,, Jean...See MoreHow big do these get in coolish climate: Chris Evert, Rio Samba,..
Comments (1)I'm wildly out of your zone, but since you haven't had replies from your zone I'll drop a note for other cold zoners. All the roses you mention are the typical knee-high roses for me that need my virtual zone 6 to survive and warmer yet to get beyond knee height, as is typical of most of my HTs/floris. Of the bunch, Strike it Rich might edge the others out as being a little larger (maybe approaching 3'), but none are big. Over the Moon and Rio Samba seem to be the least hardy, at least for me, since they have yet to survive a winter. Not what you wanted to know of course, but it keeps the thread circulating.
