I think I killed my goldfish

I have a small pond with a stream and this is the first year we have left our goldfish in the pond. We usuall bring them in for the winter but they have gotten too big. Anyway this morning I panicked when I saw snow (about 6") on top of the pond and only a small opening where the stream falls into the pond. I shoveled off the snow and then I chopped at the ice to make the opening bigger. My husband is getting a pond heater this weekend. I was reading about pond heaters and everyone of them said DO NOT CHOP AT THE ICE IT CAN SEND SHOCK WAVES AND HARM OR KILL YOUR FISH. I have been crying all morning.

The ice was about 1" thick and I hit it 3 times with a shovel. I am so broken hearted. Do you think there is a chance that they survived my attempt to "help" them? They were 13 cent goldfish from meijer, I have had them for 4 years, they are 6-7" long and I love them. Please, is there any chance they will survive?

Thanks,

Karen
