Is there more than 1 Veterans Honor?

Thanks to this board, I have found places to order my roses! I am going to order through Hortico, but when I typed in Veterans Honor 4 different choices came up. They all seemed to be the same except one was listed as just being slightly fragrant. Are there different varieties of this rose? If so, which do I order? My primary concern is a rose great for cuttings that also has an incredible fragrance.

Aggie, Veterans Honor is a HT and belongs in any cutting garden but there is virtually no fragrance detectible to my nose. However it's a good repeater and the blooms last & last-- wonderful substance to the petals. Chrysler Imperial is beautiful AND fragrant, and that's what I grew in Texas to cut for the house.

hmmm, I could have sworn I saw Veterans Honor listed on a "most fragrant"list somewhere on this message board. I may have to rethink this purchase since fragrance is so important to me. Any other opinions?

I have all 3, but of course note I'm in 9b. Chrysler Imperial - has to-die for fragrance. But, of the 3, blows the fastest. Each bloom lasts on the bush only a few days. To me, it's a rose to have for fragrance alone, but in trying to compare to Ingrid or VH as far as longevity or form - no where close. Ingrid Bergman - no fragrance for me. Blooms last longer than any rose I have - they'll last weeks on the bush. From a general bush look, I think it's my favorite of over 100 roses. The foliage is super healthy and dark green. Blooms are HUGE, and don't lose color, or fry in the heat. Color is slightly darker/deeper than VH Veterans Honor - also no fragrance for me. Blooms are the "most perfect" of the three in terms of form. Blood Red, do last a long time on the bush. Bush has more of the - blooms on the top of bush rather than throughout look. Bush is not as healthy for me as Ingrid, but it's still darned healthy. Size of bushes is all pretty similar - about 4' high. Both Ingrid and VH are wider than CI. I wouldn't be without any of the three. Each is phenomenal in its own right.

Thank you everyone - I think Francis Meilland wins the day. It truly is a beautiful hybrid tea with that classic look and a wonderful fragrance, and seems to be disease resistant, you can't do better than that. For me it has taken a little patience, but it has been worth it. I think Andrea from Michigan had a bush shot of it last year, that might actually be a better climate for it. Hers was beautiful.

Now I wish I had taken a picture of it! When I first discovered it I was more mad at it than anything. It wasn't very big and certainly not as nice as Veteran's Honor, but then again all of my roses put out pathetic blooms at around the same time frame. Most were tiny, a stark contrast to what they were producing before the winds. I'll keep an eye on the cane, it's one of the newer canes on the bush. If it does continue to produce pink blooms, it's probably better is I offer it up to an experienced rosarian. Sonja

I have to agree with Phylrae.I bought two VH bushes from J&P. The first was a grafted rose that I am sure is on Dr. Huey. I liked it so well I bought another VH from J&P the next year thought this time it was a New Generation own root that I purchased along with a New Generation Nancy Reagan and Ronald Reagan. All three came from J&P in excellent condition with huge own-root systems that rival any grafted I have ever seen. The own-root VH started well and soon was as good then better than the grafted rose. I get more blooms on a bigger and more vigorous plant with the New Generation bush compared to the grafted VH. I would recommend the New Generation Veterans' Honor from J&P without any hesitation. You will be happy with what you get. As far as the other two, I love the Ronald Reagan rose for the same qualities displayed by the VH bush. I am not so happy with the Nancy Reagan, but that is due to the cultivar, not the fact it is own-root. John

My VH is actually quite fragrant, and not just to me :). A lot of people commented on its fragrance. It is planted next to my deck and you can smell it even w/o putting your nose in. The fragrance has fruity touch, kind of like the fragrance of real Teas (not HTs). I know that many people can't smell Tea fragrance, could it be the case with VH too. Several people here commented in the past that their VH are fragrant too. Could it be the difference in our noses, not in VH bushes.

I have always found Veterans Honor to have a mild berry-like scent. A nice cut bouquet will definately enhance a room with a nice fragrance. Whatever they seem to lack in "fragrant-ness" is MORE than made up by their beauty and long lasting blooms.

I just ordered my roses! I'm so excited to get them! I decided to go with heirloom because they had all 4 I decided to get. I ended up ordering Fragrant Cloud, Papa Meilland, Chrysler Imperial, and Deep Secret. Hope I love them all! I might order Veterans Honor later. If I get enough very fragrant reds I won't mind having one that is beautiful but not so fragrant. Now I must figure out where I'm going to put them.

My DH and I have smelled Vet's Honor not only in various nurseries, but in others gardens in 3 different states. To both of our noses it's been noticeably fragrant. But then there are some roses that others call fragrant that I don't smell unless the circumstances are just right (temperature, humidity etc.). You can either take a chance or wait until your local nurseries have some VH in bloom and try it for yourself. Remember, there is nothing written in the rose bible that says that if you don't like a rose you planted you have to keep it.
