Depends on how cold. If it's just a bit below 60, you should be ok. You could pull them up closer to a house for extra protection, or if it's easy enough move it in and out. I do both in spring to get a jump on growing season here. We have a brick town home with an enclosed back yard and many nights they just stay right next to the brick. If it's repeated nights, or 50 or below, your basil will stagnate and quit growing. Keep in mind that basil is annual, so you can extend it for a while, but there's a point to just start new, from seed or cuttings. I say this having harvested all mine today due to expected frost tonight, so your 60 in Dec is sounding nice!

I couldn't wait any longer...my plants are older than yours.....I moved them outside to acclimate.....once they got some sunshine/shade they took off....Last weekend I planted them in buckets of 511 and I'll protect and "Hunker-in-place" if we get freezing weather yet.... doug

I would insulate first correctly and only then think about spending all that money for one or 2 new furnaces. If your thermostat is located on the first floor above the crawl and the crawlspace is large, its serving as a heat sink and you are losing heat thru the floor to the improperly insulated crawlspace below. This would cause im guessing the furnace to run alot longer to reach the desired temp. By the time its done so, its run so long it has overheated the 2nd floor. Where are you located and can you describe the crawlspace? Does it have vents? Crawls generally should only be insulated on the crawl walls and the vents sealed/closed depending on your location. The idea is to keep the cold air out of the crawl in winter instead of washing by some batts up on the floor. Fiberglass batts really lose R value when exposed to "wind washing". Insulate the walls of the crawlspace up to the sill with 2 inch foamboard, tape or foam all seams and put a 6 mill poly vapor barrier on the floor of the crawl. Use full sheets and overlap when needed by 12 to 24 inches and tape all seams. Run the poly up the insulated walls about 12 inches and seal it to the foamboards as well. Total cost: proly 50 to 100 bucks in supplies. Way cheaper than 2 furnaces. Good luck

It's 64° here in Larimore; it's drizzling rain and breezy. After enduring Arkansas and Texas heat and humidity the past two weeks, this feels like Heaven. Today is our 24th wedding anniversary. We went out to eat and bought a new gas grill for the patio. We also stopped by the garden center so I could get more plants for the gardens. They are still very sparce. We added three Sweet 100 cherry tomato plants, four bunches of Kale, one jalapeño and two poblano peppers, and a North Star bell pepper to the veggie garden. For the cottage side of gardening I picked up four more white cosmos, three Wave petunias (two purple, one pink) another curly parsley, four Cleome plants, two Armani peonies - and two four-packs of Super Elfin impatiens for my neighbor's two patio pots. I always put impatiens in the pots for her. I wanted two "red" peonies and Wes like the Armani's color. I know nothing about them, but I guess I'll learn! Their supplies were very limited. I have hot Tetley tea made and a "Paul Müller Selb" Bavarian porcelain cream and sugar set to add to the table today. I love this larger, funky set. Yes; like 99% of all my pretties, they are thrift shop treasures!
