This will sound awful, but just look for a clump coming up from the same area and grab it as close to the ground as you can and pull. Put it into soil or wet papertowel as soon as you pull it and plant it as soon as you can. Its not a difficult plant.

My favorite is Vinca "illunimation"....

find a spot where it is rooted in well ... dig a circle about a foot wide around it.. and pop it out of there.. then refill hole.. and drag over some other branches and hide the spot ... lol ..

take it home.. dig hole.. pop in .. water well ...

it can root just about anywhere it touches ground.. which means it will also root easily .. so cut a few 8 inch end piece at moms.. and put them in some water .. and they will most likely root if you have any idea of how to do that ... then you have a failsafe should the plant itself die ...

you are going to have to try real hard to kill it.. just make sure it has water for the year.. and you should be all set ...

As Chills says, "it's not a difficult plant"; when you dig up a clump (or pull it up!), lift it carefully and lots of runners should come with it. All along those
runners, you'll see little clumps of roots - each clump can be cut off the main
runner, and VOILA!, you have a new plant. In addition, that original big clump you dug can be "teased" apart into multiple plants; new plants can be planted
6"-12" apart and they'll fill in. While their favorite location is partial shade,
I also grow them in full shade and full sun (extra water needed in full sun).
You needn't worry about being too gentle with this plant: last Spring, I transplanted a huge patch from a garden area to it's new location in a narrow bed along the driveway, by simply lifting a spadeful of vinca from the garden and unceremoniously dropping it into a similar-sized hole in the new
bed, spaced 12" apart. By late Fall, they had all filled in and the bed of vinca looked as though it had been there forever !

In case you were hoping it might climb that chain link fence - it won't. . .it's
just a trailing plant, but one of my favorite groundcovers.

This partly depends on what area of the country you live in. Here in the Northwest or in moderately moist locations it is "not a difficult plant". However, my mother, an excellent gardener, lives in New Mexico. Her soil is very alkaline. She had a lot of difficulty getting it established. She had to regularly replace transplanted clumps over the course of several years. I think it was a full four years or more before her Vinca had truly "established" itself.
