What to go with my Weeping Japanese Maple

I am having to redo an area which I had planted a weeping Japanese Maple in...it was actually part of a water feature. The pond is now no more and I need to upgrade the fence, but I am not sure what to match the maple up with....don't think I can move it as it has been there for 10+ years. Pic is from 2007.

what does age have to do with moving it????

is there a better place for it???? if so.. since it is small.. and in back.. perhaps you should move it ...

that said.. the Asian theme would include hosta ... which can be chosen for diminutive size

you should be able to move it without a problem if you do it while its dormant; ie next month as soon as you can dig a hole. as for what would look good with it, i have small blue hostas, snow angel heuchera, creeping jenny, blue spruce sedum, phalaris strawberries and cream, and painted ferns under and around mine.

In the top picture there is a narrow 'V' where the two main branches diverge. Narrow crotches like this split easier than branches that go out at a wider angle. Snow and ice usually do it as the branches get larger. Kids and dogs are also culprits, as is mishandling. If you look closely this has already happened at the very top of the maple. Choose a maple with a good structure that will hold a good canopy in the future. The lower left limb on my maple has no future as it will eventually be superceded by the branches above it. It does not contribute to supporting the canopy. It has subsequently been removed. I should have spotted it earlier.

The company replied, and told me that if I researched Ryusens, the characteristics would all be the same = same cultivar even if not same clone. Unless they thought Joe Public wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two anyway, and since information on 'Eric's Weeping' was scarce descriptions of the other would do. Yes: it's not unusual for wholesale growers to have "their own introductions" that look a lot like existing, familiar varieties with different naming. For instance I've had a grower representative in my area use the same phrasing to characterize a conifer that had their own naming on it as was used about the 'Eric's Weeping'. That is that it had the same features as another, widely sold kind. As with the response about the 'Eric's Weeping' it wasn't an explicit admission that they had put their own name on an established variety, but... I've also had a grower here explain an unfamiliar variety name for a flowering tree they were offering by saying that it consisted of propagations of unlabeled specimens that were already on the property when they bought it. That they had actually assumed that this existing planting was the same kind as a variety they knew in the old country. But had gone ahead and made up a new name for their own sales here in the US. The way they came right out with this story made me think such looseness with cultivar names was thought to be standard operating procedure in the industry. There certainly are cultivars that have acquired multiple synonyms over time, same as with various wild species plants.

Jo, I "think" I see buds on the tree. Reason for the quotation marks is it's just a bit blurry to my eyes, but it does appear there are viable buds on the plant. where in creation are you? And are other maples greening out in your area? It's been a cool/ fairly dry spring where I happen to live, and that's not conducive to rapid greening out of plants. Give it time. Also realize, a tree in a container is under constant stress. That's just not a good growing environment. Not saying don't do it-I'm sure you've got your reasons-but do be aware, plants are typically somewhat stunted by such growing conditions as found in a pot.

I have a much larger maple of the same type (mine's Garnet) that makes a great foil for many plants. I've liked it with rose campion, Tellima grandiflora, white japanese anemones, white cosmos, and this year I'm trying it with Crambe maritima.

That said, the Lady's Mantle in the picture looks very nice with the maple. I also agree that hostas would also look good, maybe 'Halycon' or something similar.

Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' is a beauty underneath and/or beside a red-leaved Japanese Maple. I would bet that other forms of the Hakone Grass would also be nice.

CPG, the Japanese forest grass (Hakone grass) is always high on my list for pairing with Japanese maples, too :-) I also lean heavily towards epimediums and heucheras as well. Low growing plants in gold tones are a great compliment for weeping red leafed JM's as is blue-toned foliage, often provided by hostas.

The only codicil for companion plants is to avoid anything that will require frequent division as extraneous cultivation in the root area will not be appreciated by the maple and can lead to problems.

as usual, i am on the bus w/ cool and gg. my personal preference for combos goes with the yellow/blues complamenting the burgundy rather than the white foliar variegation. ex- hosta Great Expectations and hakonechloa macra aureola.

How about something with a larger leaf with perhaps a splotch of color in it that would echo the color of the maple. I think there are geraniums and heucheras that would fit the bill and some better behaved persicarias as well.
