Pearly Gates or Compassion?

I am replacing a vine (a gorgeous light blue sky flower that took over the world) and would like to put a pink climber in it's very prominent and high rent spot. I have (tentatively) decided on either Pearly Gates or Compassion. The pictures on HMF didn't help at all - in other words, they were both so beautiful that I am totally unable to decide. Would either of those work on an umbrella kind of trellis?

Of course, I've waited so long that I may have to wait another year.

Thanks a bunch!

Any thoughts? The climate here is hot and humid.....The plant will be located on the east side of the house so will get very nice morning to mid-afternoon sunshine.

That's okay that you posted on the wrong forum.
I can still make a suggestion though, right?
'Climbing Pinkie' should work and would be very tough and healthy, with almost no thorns.

Oh my gosh! I tried to get "Pearly Gates" earlier from RU and it wasn't available! As a matter of fact, I posted a question on the forum asking people to compare Pearly Gates to Compassion because I couldn't decide which to get. The question was "Pearly Gates or Compassion?" and some posters initially thought I was asking whether to SP a rose (send it to the "pearly gates"!) or save it ("compassion") - it was pretty funny! Anyway, I ended up getting Compassion and Polka instead but I think I may have to put ol' Pearly Gates back on the list after seeing yours (that America looks pretty good to me, too, hmmmmmm) Beautiful clematis and sure wish they grew here! I recall Pearly Gates from a Houston garden tour years and years ago - sprawled across a long fence with huge, gorgeous pale pink blooms. I finally got around to getting one in early summer when Roses Unlimited had their sale. Its potted and growing well and I cant wait to see if the blooms are as lovely as I remembered. For me to remember a rose all those years ago, it had to be really special. I have a very small Kiss Me Kate ordered as a band. Mine is doing fine but not making any great growth strides. I have a friend with gorgeous roses who bought a small one - his is now quite large and should be having its first flush this fall. He fertilizes weekly with a bit of triple 13 - and his roses look fabulous. May be this rose needs a boost of fertilizer frequently.......as Kim [roseseek] says, fertilize weekly, weakly. I am going to try it - just waiting for Kate to get a good root system going. Judith

I'm with Randy on this one. I think Climbing Pinkie would be a better choice. Compassion is beautiful, indeed, but it seems to grow much more stiff and upright... I really can't imagine it cascading down the umbrella top. Pinkie definitely would.

I don't grow Pearly Gates.

Heh, heh, I actually have two Climbing Pinkies in another spot. My dad had one that was truly magnificent! I am always trying to keep up with the ol' Dad's plants (and failing)! No matter how I do everything "right" for my tomato plants, I go visit him and his are twice as big and nice! He is one of those "not by the book" guys too.

Back to Pinkie, I am still waiting for mine to come into their glory. I have had a problem with them being planted next to a fence and horses eating them :) (can you say GLUE!!!!!) It happened again this year when my poor husband didn't secure the gate. Well, let's just say that I wasn't too happy! They may have to remain in bush form since they have been eaten down twice.

Thanks for the thought on Compassion being stiff; I guess I better consider that issue!

I thought this might be a post about whether to shovel prune (send it to the "Pearly Gates") or save (show "Compassion") a rose that wasn't performing well for you, Lynn. :)

Pearly Gates is a sport of America, so if you've seen it you'll have an idea of how Pearly Gates will grow. It certainly can be trained to curve over the top of an arbor or umbrella trellis, but the canes will not dangle down unless and until they get really long (not too likely to happen in most climates).

That's a good one, Redbirds. It reminds me of the garden I visited which the owner called "Rose Heaven". The only way into the garden was to go through an arbor that had Pearly Gates growing up each side. Thus you had to enter through the Pearly Gates to get to Rose Heaven.

Redbirds - yes, that was pretty funny! I hadn't thought of it that way!

Ok, it is appearing that I have the wrong type rose for my umbrella (or the wrong structure for the right rose! Sure do like both of those roses - dad nab it!) At this point I may have to just let the skyflower do it's thing for another year. It has really beautiful flowers but by late summer it is a ginormous mass covering the umbrella and surrounding plants. It finally blew over during Hurricane Ike....

Of course, not having a place to put a rose/daylily/perennial has never stopped me from purchasing anyway!
