To risk repeating what may have already been said here, Viburnum nudum needs to be cross pollinated to achieve better fruit set. It is not a question of male and female flowers borne on separate plants(dioecious), as with hollies; they simply need 2 different clones (ie different cultivars). Two plants of the same clone will pollinate each other, but fruit set is MUCH better with cross-pollination. As Viburnum nudum 'Winterthur' is one of the most commonly found clones (aka cultivars) suitable pollinators would be either an un-named clone of V. nudum (straight species), V. nudum 'Count Pulaski' or 'Earthshade'. The correct name is 'Earthshade', NOT 'Earthshades', and it was introduced by William Flemer IV, formerly of Princeton Nurseries, when he owned Earthshade Nursery in North Carolina in the 1990's. Thanks for the suggestions. I forgot to mention the berries were spherical and always shiny, even when black, so that rules out both Capsicum & Viburnum species shown. I think I would have remembered if the berries were purple at one point, too, so that mostly rules out Capsicum. I did find a pic of (supposedly) Solanum nigrum online that had red berries, though there were conflicting captions on the photo. Maybe my mystery bush was Solanum nigrum after all, or maybe some other species of Solanum. Here is a link that might be useful:

You are quite welcome - and there is so much more to know about one of my favorite genera. The conversation here is the classroom. And your commentary about recent weather events in your plants' lives has offered a lesson in relatively unobservable but possibly causal issues... The damage wrought by snow loads and ice storm accumulations on plants that survive the initial event are often invisible to those who don't know to look. We think of the trees that crash to the ground, or limbs that are torn asunder, or shrubs that are flattened/crushed and need rejuvenation. We don't think so much about those plants that are impossibly bent like so many botanical contortionists, yet return to their apparently normal selves upon snow or ice melt. What lays hidden is the longitudinally split stem and other internal xylem/phloem damage - which then suddenly can reveal its effect come the following growing season. I can't say that this is the only thing that is wrong with your plant, but it sure can be a contributor. The best thing (if there is one, with a suffering viburnum as the subject) is that Burkwood Viburnum is an incredibly vigorous and tough plant under most circumstances. If this isn't a root rot or excessively wet site problem, you can likely cut back any parts that are underperforming - read: dead - and this plant will respond with strong new growth from basal dormant buds. Water and fertilize to encourage the new growth.

Sorry. I wonder if I did something wrong or if Photobucket is just down. I have four different v. dentatums and they don't bloom at the same time. I thought it was strange that my Chicago Luster had so many berries and the others had none. I planted a couple Blue Muffins in the shade and they haven't even bloomed. I hope they will when they get bigger. The Chicago Luster has one Autumn Jazz on each side of it. I also have one plain species and another Blue Muffin that bloomed but no berries. Which viburnum did you get Gld?
