Pink Climber: Need Info

I've searched on this topic, but still have some questions about which pink climber to plant this spring. I have room for only one, and I want something that blooms all season. I've grown Eden, and don't want it for this space because it has too many thorns. The best pink climber I've ever grown in my area is Climbing Coral Dawn, which is really a lovely shade of salmon-ish pink (not blue-ish), but I can't seem to find it in the last four or five years.

Pink Peace was heartedly recommended in this forum, but the conversation regarding it was in 2008, and I'm wondering if there might be a better one on the market since then.

I've been reading about Social Climber, and wonder if it's as good as PP, or maybe better. I'd appreciate any information on a great, all-season, pink climber. It shouldn't get more than 8' to 10' tall.

What growing zone or city do you live in? Recommendations for cold winter climbers may differ from thosein warmer winter zones.

Hi Jane, I got this rose last year from Palatine. It's pretty and does have a fragrance, but it's not very strong. It was in a pot for the first year and I just transfered it to the ground, it looks very happy and is covered in lovely glossy green leaves right now - also a ton of buds. Last year it did get a touch of Powdery Mildew but then I don't spray and it really did not get too bad. My growing climate is a bit different to yours so I don't know exactly how it will do for you. I suggested the Clematis for the spot because I wasn't sure a climbing rose would work there. I am imagining that a rose vigorous enough to grow into the cedars would also want to get wide and massive, and keeping it attached to the cedar may get annoying. Clematis montana cultivars do get big, but their stems are thin and light, and will climb on their own into the cedars once they reach the lower branches. If you want later color that isn't dark, consider Clematis virginiana or Clematis flammula (both are fragrant white Autumn-blooming clematis) or the pink-edged white 'Rubromarginata' hybrid (also very fragrant). To break down the clematis "groups" simply, Type 1 are large plants with small flowers, and bloom in late Spring, a little earlier than most of the once-blooming roses. They bloom on old wood, so if you need to prune, you do it right after they flower, giving them time to grow more wood to be hardened over winter and bloom the following Spring. These include the montanas and Clematis armandii (both are fragrant), as well as some others. Type 2 are medium-sized climbers, usually with large flowers. They bloom on old and new wood, and usually twice -- once in late Spring to early Summer (usually just after the Type 1) on old wood, then they pause during the peak of Summer, and bloom again in August/September on new wood. Most don't need much pruning at all besides tidying up in the Spring. Type 3 includes the non-climbing herbaceous clematis, large-flowered Summer-blooming clematis like 'Jackmanii', the small-flowered Summer-blooming species and close hybrids, and the small-flowered Autumn-blooming species and close hybrids (the latter are often fragrant). Those that bloom in Summer usually start just as the Type 2 finish their fist bloom, while the Autumn-blooming ones usually bloom when the Type 2 are finishing their second bloom. Type 3 blooms only on new wood, and so are typically pruned harshly to keep them from getting bare at the base. The general rule of thumb is to find the lowest set of healthy leaf buds, and prune to just above them in the Spring. This might be only 12" from the ground. Of course, you could leave them unpruned higher up if they're trained into trees. In that case, I'd just snip them right above where they first reach into the branches, and only worry about pulling out last year's growth if it looks obvious and messy. :-) ~Christopher

hihi i planted viking queen on my south facing wall alongside clematis will goodwin and daphnes species anemones and peonies in 2005.....i saw VQ very widely recommended but i havent been too happy....i really wanted something fragrant in this very tiny front garden and despite its billing as fragrant i havent found it to be noticeably so....also the blooms in spring are a very blowsy and tend to flop forward and look down rather than out...and the colour is a rather dull uniform pink....in the fall the blooms tend to have a stronger tea shape and crisper colour....but all in all not the character plant i looked for.... so now i am up for suggestions>>> the wall is white and garden now contains blues lavenders whites and pinks .want a good repeater...and some real fragrance...excellent sheltered site....there is a good wire trellis support on the wall....soil is supporti daphnes and clematis equally well....the spot is dry and sunny but air circulation is not the very best due to density of plantings and iron trellis work some undr consideration climbing cecile brunner zehirine drouhin gloire de dijon ilse krohn white cap mme isaac pereire mme alfred carriere cl. ophelia any and all opinions adn suggestions very welcome thank you

Depending on what zone and conditions you mean, I really like Renae best for a pink climber without thorn issues. I forget how tall, though. Heritage is very quick to repeat and definitely makes a small climber in my zone. I love Heritage :)

The blooms are smaller (so far; they may get bigger with a big ole specimen) but Rural England really, really blooms a lot. Thorns are little and more prickly than painful.

Pink Perpetue might not be the pink you are thinking of, but I really suggest her highly. So pretty, with quick repeat. No scent. Thorns are average. She will get tall if you let her, but she doesn't mind pruning and doesn't grow rampantly.

I have Social Climber :) I just got her last year, so I can't tell you much about her except her disease resistance seems quite good.

I have two climbing Coral Dawn rooted cuttings that overwintered but they are very small and won't be ready until late spring. Just came across them today while repotting cuttings.

Coral Dawn is one of my favourites too. If you can find Pink Cloud it is well worth a look at, Penny Lane and Compassion have very nice fragrance and rebloom. However, I have never seen a climber with quite the same colour as Coral Dawn.

My apologies everyone. I posted the question, then promptly left town unexpectedly, and didn't log in again until just now.

I live in Zone 5 (sometimes 4.5), Salt Lake City.

I will consider those climbers recommended, but still wonder if any of you are growing Social Climber -- and, if so, do you recommend it?

Unfortunately, I "fell" for Q E a couple of years ago. I wonder why the ARS rates it so highly. Does anyone know?

Thanks so much for all your help. Experience really IS the best teacher, IMO, when growing roses, and that's why I go to the real experts: you home growers.

You will need cold-hardiness, for sure. Disease pressure should be really low in UT, though--lucky you!

The shrub or bush form of Queen Elizabeth is an outstanding rose, even now over 50 years after introduction, if you can find a vigorous virus free clone.

The climbing sport is just not very good. Climbing sports of HT roses are often not as good as the shrub form where rebloom is concerned. QE is one of these.

OK, now it makes sense, and thank you for that information. I do remember growing the climbing version of Peace a few years back, and over a period of three years, it had about three blossoms each summer and I had to pull it out. I guess my QE will have to follow that path too.

Compassion and Clair Matin both do well for me in my zone 5a rose garden. Although they die back some, I still have 3-4 feet of green wood left every spring. They both repeat well, Compassion with one bloom per stem and Clair Matin in really nice clusters.

I've read about Polka, An Apricot blend cl that has had good reviews and is an introduction by Meilland. However I wonder about it's hardiness as neither Hortico nor Pickering offer it and since it was introduced in 1996 should have by now become known to both.

Anyone tried it in Z5?

If you can grow Coral Dawn as a climber and it doesn't get too set back by winters, the options are pretty good and there's more to choose from. However, there are not that many repeat fragrant climbers that are comparable to New Dawn's hardyness: Etude, Emelie (peachy pink sport of leverkusen) and that's about it. The others are less hardy. There's really not that many hardy climbers, and even fewer new ones.

The yellow climber Leverkusen has given a few pinkish sports, but I can only remember this one

In your zone, you might want to consider Viking Queen--beautiful blooms, good scent, winter hardiness.
