Name That Plant!

Mystery good luck plant???

Hi. I got this plant from a gent who said that in Asia, it's a good luck plant and bloom around winter time there(?). It used to look pretty, but I nelected it :-(

I'm trying to take care of it again and did some bad pruning. The branches used to be tied in a circular fashion or braided, but dried out/died during the cold. I cut them off so new branches can grow. At one point, suckers started growing from the root so I cut and re-potted them. Check out the link to see what the baby plant look like.

I never did catch or remember the name of this plant, so you help is greatly appreciated.

Photinia serrulata I believe.
They commonly re-seed in garden setting at least in my area.

Thanks for your reply. I googled 'Photinia serrulata' to get many looks of that plant. I don't think that is my plant.

The leaf edges on my plant is very wavy or crinkly when it mature. Young leaves are copper reddish-brown. Small whitish speckles cover the bark when the branch mature. Maybe a bird-eyed view will help.

noinwi - I deliberately planted some of my tomatoes and peppers in big containers, and have had them all indoors for a few days now. First so the wind wouldn't blow over my containers, and now so the frost doesn't kill off all of my peppers and tomatoes. On an impulse I went and bought more pepper and tomato plants from Home Depot (all 98 cents a plant). It's in anticipation that my peppers and tomatoes in the ground won't make it. In both the pepper plant containers, there are two seedlings each. So four pepper plants for $2 seemed like a good deal to me. Of course, if my tomato and pepper plants survive outside, I am going to have a hard time finding space for plants I just bought. Oh well, I figure something out.

Sunni, Mine is around 4 feet, but I consider that to be huge for zone 5 in May. It has very strong, long canes. It sounds like most people did not have much luck with it either. I should know better than to trust an unproven J and P rose!! They will market any piece of crap they think they can sell. I will never forget when I ordered Vanilla Perfume from them (I think that was the name)Well, it wasn't vanilla, or any other scent, and never got more than 18" tall. What a relief when I put that one out of its misery! It's going to be harder to kill this one, because the plant looks so good. However, at some point, I probably will.

Euarto, I'd recommend you either try someone in the western part of the country or else, a real expert with squash, who, like you mention, has had success with c. maximas. Here in my part of Oklahoma, they are VERY susceptible to squash vine borers. You might contact Glenn Drowns at Sandhill Preservation Center. He's such an expert. But if a GW member, say from Washington State or California, were to offer, I bet they could do it for you. George Tahlequah, OK

I have grown this heuchera successfully in a container with some other stuff, and it has done great. It overerwintered in the pot last year, and I plan on combining it with pansies for this winter too.

'Curly Fantasy' and other forms such as 'Aculeata' closely resemble your plant.

First, thank you saltcedar, you were partially right.

Google saved the day. I typed in what I can remember about it, "yellow flower, Vietnamese New Year plant, pluck leaves to force flower to bloom, etc..." and BAM, I got my answer.

It's a Bong Mai, or a Hoa Mai, or scientifically, Ochna serrulata (South Africa) or Ochna integerrima (Vietnam). It's also called a Mickey Mouse plant.

Judging by the leaves and bark on mine, my mystery plant looks more like Ochna serrulata (South Africa).

Finally, I can sleep well at night. LOL! I hate it when I have plants with no name.
