When to move and plant roses in my area?

I'm in far NW Missouri. I have a couple of bagged roses to be planted and I have some Blaze that I had to put in the ground last year so they would live that I need to move now to their forever home. When is it safe to plant and move roses?

I would not be afraid to plant them in a couple of weeks or your a little bit of a risk taker....right now.

Bare root roses (Your bagged roses are bare root) can be planted as soon as you can work the soil. Soak for 24 hours in a bucket of water. Plant so the bud union (graft knob) is 4-6 inches below the soil surface in your zone. Mound soil over the exposed canes, leaving just the cane tips exposed, to protect and keep them from drying out. When new growth appears above the soil mound, you can remove it or just let nature do it with spring rains. The soil won't harm anything.
Transplant now while the bush is dormant.

Your subject line is great. I don't think of lilies as "menacing monsters", but a 6' Longiflorum (??!!) They must be beautiful, but I can see how it would be a bit unexpected. While I've never heard of a longiflorum getting that tall (usually they max out at ~3'), Wikipedia mentions a variety used in the cut flower industry that gets taller, so maybe that's what you got. Were these potted lilies for Easter that you put out (the growers use growth inhibitors), or where these intended for the garden trade? The safest thing would be to leave them alone until their foliage dies back in the Fall and then move them. But, if they are as vigorous as you say, you can probably carefully move them after they bloom. Try not to break off the stalk or damage too many roots because they need time for the leaves to photosynthesize to build the bulb back up after the rigors of blooming. Dig a relatively large hole around each one and then feel around with your hands to find the bulbs. I did that last year with my Muscadet (I'm too impatient to wait) and they all came up this year stronger than before. So it can be done, it's just a little riskier and you have to be more careful. -Helen

You have the hot pink native Texas rock rose! As far as I know, there's no wrong time to move these hardy beauties; just get as much root as you can, & water it until it is established, when you'll see new growth.

FYI, you can move a rose any time of the year as long as the outside daytime temperature is below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Even if you accidentally cut off all the roots during transplanting, cut the canes down to 20", keep the soil moist, and the plant will recover. Keep it in a pot in the shade until new branches are formed before moving it into full sun. Depending on the variety, it will take anywhere between one to six months (or longer) for new roots to form, and up to a year for new growth, so be patient. I've had completely dead looking roses send up new shoots, therefore, I don't throw roses out until it's been verifiably dead for two years. If the plant already has all its roots intact just plant it in its permanent location. As the temperatures creep up towards the 80's there's less chance of success due to cane desiccation. Last May I moved 75 well established (10 years or older) rose bushes from Los Angeles to San Francisco, some without any roots, and lost only a handful of them. The surviving 70 are doing great.

I planting 4 today! We're having a warm spell, 60's during the day, mid 30's at night which is unusual for Denver this time of year. Since I can work the ground, I'm taking the chance and do plan to mound them with soil. We won't get enough rain or snow to remove the soil mounds, so I'll check them periodically and remove the soil by mid-April if we don't have cold spells or our usual spring blizzard or two. If I remove the soil too soon and weather threatens, I put a big pot or crock over the bush at night and take it off in the morning.
The roses arrived bare root from Pickering on Friday and have been soaking in a bucket in the bathroom overnight.
My family loves me this time of year.;o)

We have a warm week coming up and I think I will take the opportunity to get out and get these in the ground :)

That would be I'm planting, not I. Should have proofread before submitting, oops!
I got mine planted today. I am so not in gardening shape. I have a couple of blisters and my elbows are sore.
But I'm grinning. It felt so good to get out and dig!

Oh good to hear you got some garden time. I can't wait for things ot start blooming!! I moved here in the middle of a hot summer and had a lot of plants I'd dug up and moved with me. I'm anxious to see which made it and which didn't. So far, most of the roses look like they still have life.

Freezing weather should not be an issue for newly planted bareroots--it often takes a few weeks for them to leaf out. It is the new leaves we are worried about.

Update, so far so good. I got the climbing blaze roses moved, added another one, added a couple bare roots, even chopped up another rose I have and transplanted pieces to other areas of the yard and so far everything is doing pretty well.

New growth has a lot of natural sugars that act as an antifreeze. Unless it gets well below 25, frost or light freezes won't harm your roses. Regardless, it would just slightly damage the foliage not the bush.
Don't you wonder how these plants have survived all these years without our assistance?
