Privacy hedge/shrub ideas for dense, dry shade.

In Michigan. Back of lot line, a row of evergreens back there is going kaput, quite heavily shaded by nearby large, maturing oaks. The evergreens are sparse and scraggly, not yielding much privacy anymore.

I do know two things that thrive back there, buckthorn and Tartarian honeysuckle. Yuck.

Any ideas for anything a little less, well, a weed? Something with a little more class and pizzazz?

And no, a fence is not an option. I wish it were. My community restricts fences quite heavily, but has no restrictions on hedgerows.
