Overwintering lily with pond fish in garage?

The water temp in the pond is dropping now with all the cool nights lately, down to 50-55F. This year, after a near total fish loss due to disease, I am planning on wintering the 2 remaining shubunkin, 4 baby comet fry, 5 minnows and trapdoor snails in a 50 gallon stock tank in my insulated but not usually heated garage. I will be putting in a bubbler for sure and also a heater if needed to prevent thick ice.

This is my first year trying this method of over-wintering - seems almost too easy...

Can I also put the cut-back lily (Perry's Almost Black) as well into the same tank?

I overwintered my fish in a 300 gal tank in my insulated and not heated garage one winter only. The temps dropped to -35F during the night and I came out to find the line I had going from a pump in the tank to a filter barrel to circulate the water had frozen. The pump had a fountain head on it which ended up spraying all but 1 ft of the water out of the tank and the rest was under 2 inches of ice. Fish were okay though. Long story short if I'd had a heater in the tank and not trying to run the pump through a barrel/waterfall wouldn't have had the problem. Fish now come into my basement for the winter which will be soon as it was only 37F this morning.

There's green water (pea soup or suspended algae), then there's string algae...2 different forms of algae. UVs won't work on string algae. String algae, to an extent, keeps my water clear until my plants get growing in spring. The more healthy, actively growing plants, the more competition for nutrients with the string algae. The brush works great when the string algae gets out of hand in my pond; actually, I use a rake, but I wouldn't try this at home, kids. :D I've never had suspended algae, but there's a great article in the FAQ section (see link below). I would bet they are last years fish, so the bad raccoon didn't get them all. I had some baby comet goldfish last year. Mom & Dad are about 4-6 inches long (exactly which two did the nasty I don't know). They were tiny critters I would have missed except for one who was 10 times the size of the others. Big guy was maybe 1/4 inch when I spied him last summer, then saw 20-30 others. I have 3 next to me right now in a fish tank that are slightly over an inch long now, but they were fed all winter long. The weird part of getting babies is I have two ponds, the larger one had fish and the smaller one just plants. The babies appeared in the small pond! I figure I must have transfered the eggs with some plants as I never saw babies in the big pond. I think any babies in the big pond got eaten by the big fish in there.

Patti, I would be agast at the rate you are being charged for electric power but I am fairly sure it must be 0.0769 rather than $7.69. If my DH was in shock at the utilities now I hate to think what might happen at that rate. The correct number should be on the electric bill somewhere. Last year I got a 100 watt deicer and while it worked, I wound up putting in my homemade deicer. With two 75 watt lightbulbs it made a much larger hole for gas exchange. It made me feel better but it didn't do anything for the fish.LOL I used a garbage can in the garage to keep the fishies over the winter for 4 years. I only saw a skim of ice once. I used a bubbler and a small submersible pump from Harbor Freight and a small filter. It worked fine. Remember that if the water warms up too much the fish will get frisky and want to eat and then they would have to power down again when the temp got lower. That isn't good for them. Sandy

Parrot's feather is hardy outdoors here in Portland and if you are in a Zone 8 part of BC it should be fine for you too. My ponding friends in Vancouver and I do the same with our plants and have almost identical weather and experiences with what lives and what doesn't. Frogbit and umbrella grass (cyperus) are tropical and won't make it outdoors. I have potted water gardens as small as 16" outside all winter. I've had ceramic pots crack so I now use plastic/foam pots that look like ceramic but aren't. I've got LA iris, Jap iris, parrot's feather, mini parrot's feather, equiseteum, mini equiseteum, marsh marigold, pickeral, acorus, mini acorus, black flowering rush, slender rush, corkscrew rush, variegated water celery, mares tail, golden club, aquatic forget me plus 10 different hardy waterlilies all staying out for winter with no special precautions other than cutting off any dead growth. I don't sink anything into deeper water, most are in container water gardens anyway. Graziella would be just fine outside for winter, I've had one for over five years, all I do is cut off the dead pads. She is planted in a liner pond with a mud over the liner so no pot. The pond is less than two feet deep.

When the weather is mild in Spring there's a strong chance the fish will graze on the brittle submerse foliage of the waterlily and cripple it, putting some barrier around the waterlily to keep the fish off it will avoid that

I just moved my fish and plants to the basement> I put a couple of the waterlily's in the pools ( see pic below) and the rest I put into clear plastic bags after I cut them back, tied them shut and put into the darkest cornor of the basement or closet. They all made it thru the winter and bloomed this spring. I was going to try to winter a frog thats been hanging around. Husband didn't think was such a good idea as I have a cat Lol. Here's a pic of my setup in the basement, and I leave the light on 24/7.... I counted all the babies my big goldfish had last year-279 babies thats why I have 2 pools Good Luck...

That's a nice set-up, sheri. How are you filtering/ oxygenating the second pool? In the house, do you think that you will be continuing to feed the fish? I have cats too, 2 of whom would no doubt be swimming in that water looking for take-out sushi.

I would really prefer to use my basement as well but it's heated and I was kind of hoping to keep the water temp between 32 - 50F to induce dormancy. If I do keep things in the garage, it does seem wiser to run the heater from the onset. Sure as heck wouldn't want the same scenario that jalal found in the dead of winter, especially as I am away from home for long stretches at a time. Gotta love zone 3.

I think that I will use an overturned perforated planting basket over the lily plant to prevent fish nibbles. Thank you, sdavis.

Hello,

I have a 600 gph pump with a prefilter in it I just let the water come straight up and it add's plenty of oxygen to the water..yes I feed them everyday, just enough so my water dosen't cloud up from to much fish waste..and change about 20% of there water every 2 weeks...
You could maybe put a screen over a pool so the kitty's don't have lunch. My fish really don't bother the waterlily's, but you know how that goes. Where are you from ????

I keep thinking I should just dig the pond deeper so they can stay out, but with our cold hard winters, I am so attached to these fish, I must be to go thru what I do for them LOL...
