Steve - what deer repellent were you referring to? Two groups of deer make daily trip in my backyard and every time I hear the phrase "effective deer repellent", my ears "perk" up...

Glendora is virtually impossible to kill without gasoline or Round Up in these parts. Kim

Liquid Fence Deer and Rabbit Repellent. I started using it last summer on one rose. I'll provide more feedback as the season progresses. I planted three new hybrid teas and trimmed back Portland from Glendora and I have an old
Galway Bay. I will spray six bushes.

Pruned with malice, I like that. I'm doing 'hold no prisoners' pruning this year. I've been lax the last couple of years and I usually wimp out on pruning hard, not this year. And it is very rewarding when they pump out the new growth in response.

I've had good luck with Deer Away, but I don't have a huge deer problem.

Most of the deer repellent sprays I have tried work fine, except that you have to spray again if it rains, or if there is any new growth (which of course at this time of year is every day).

That was my experience also. Spraying over a hundred bushes constantly was too much so I surrendered. I think I can manage six that are close to each other. I have a small spray bottle and only hit the new growth or newer growth after the rain. The quart should last me a few years.

Steve, your roses all seem to be doing fine, but I did just want to mention that in most climates, and of course especially the dry ones, roses really need to be mulched to be at their best. You may already be doing this but I noticed that the two short roses had bare ground around them. My roses really improved after I began mulching more, and of course with the scarcity of water in many places it's also a bonus that the mulch will keep the roots moist longer.

I had bunches of Glendora at one time since they were so easy to root and agree that this is one tough rose. It probably loved its haircut. Mine tended to get rangy if not pruned enough.

All my roses except the three hybrid teas I just planted have been in the ground for 20 years. Before the great deer onslaught of the 90's I had bark down. I have roses particularly climbers all over the yard. But my "rose garden" just went from the two plants I photographed to five. I guess I'll mulch that area to protect the babies.

Between The squirrels an and the elements my drip watering system is toast. I use a lawn type sprayer (not rainbird) and soak the roses once a week. I'ts worked fine.
