Comments (17)Wow LP, that is an impressive set-up. I was going to suggest more aggressive water changes, but you state that water is so expensive. We do have have to use de-clor in our water, so we run fresh water in the pond everyday with the hose. We let the hose run for about 10 minutes, and estimate that we change about 35 to 40 % of the water each week. We clean the filter pads once a week and only run the skimmer in the Spring and fall to collect the tree droppings. We have also discovered a wonderful filter medium -- 'Easter Grass'. We put it into waldmart laundry bags (they cost 1.50 each) Fill the bag with Easter grass 1/2 way up, tie off the center and turn it inside out so that it is in half. (So that there is more netting so that the grass doesn't escape) Put it in your filter box (keep it away from any pumps, in case grass escapes, you don't want it to clog your pump) Rinse it off once a week, when you clean the filters. We discovered this a few years ago, originally we meant it to use as bio-filtration but discovered was fantastic as mechanical filtration. You can't believe the stuff clinging to this grass every week. Here is a photo of the new one we made up this spring. here it is inverted inside out, before placing in the pond Lily, Here's a shot of a "fish out of water"...See MoreShow me your biggest hosta
Comments (55)EE, THANK you for the picture of your Dark Shadows, I am astonished at the size of it. Little did I know it could get that large. I not only have one which is growing nicely, I ordered a second one this spring. Now, I suppose I'll be covered up in Dark Shadows! Wow, it is so pretty. And, it is one of the fragrants too. Harry, your garden is a perfect spot to meander. Not only are the hosta in fine form, the entire space is well balanced and appropriately arranged. Are you one who keeps a tour garden? I think it is beautiful. Surely you have help maintaining it in such a pristine condition?...See MoreThe oldest kitchen remodel on GW...finally finished cherry kitche
Comments (72)RM :( I'm so sorry to read your son is still challenged. And more so to see you're on the horrific "diagnostic" road trip literally. I wish there was something that could be done to blow that danged road up....I don't miss it and hate hearing anyone is traveling it. I can only hope you have a short trip! Virtual hugs in the biggest of ways hun! I have only this advice, learned in year three of that road....carry a big purse and a wine opener. You'll be a friend to many a parent if you lock the door to the parent room and crack open a bottle quietly :) Screw tops can be your friends as well. (And for those horrified that one would drink in a hospital...you haven't spent months in one I guarantee). A quiet glass of wine at 11 when the kids are finally asleep and it's marginally quiet (only the sickest kids are making noise that never goes away, soft cries of pain...that glass of wine alone in the dark while you thank god that's not your child every so often is a peace you don't understand). Enough of that....back to the chickens! hm here's a photo of just the backsplash uninstalled. We framed it in nordic black antique granite to make it fit the space it's in (Joe the tile guy rocked!) So the funny thing is....I've had to move (because of my son's health we had to leave alaska) so we have a new house and two kitchens to remodel/build LOL So I get to start planning all over again :) I can't wait to start from the beginning all over again....(which makes you wonder if I do crack does it not? I can't afford it, I have to finance another kitchen LOL). Star thanks for the nag. I missed the first one :) (You're good LOL) I'll work on the worksheet over the next couple of days. :)...See MoreKoi with injury
Comments (23)I'm somewhat dismayed: I went back to check the pond and several of the goldfish and minnows died. I really don't understand why, unless the strips I'm using are totally bad. I monitored it during the entire fill time, and none of the levels looked bad at all. The chlorine fluctuated SLIGHTLY when I measured it right next to the bottom of the waterfall, but a measurement from the other side of the pond didn't show any chlorine, and the PH, if it dropped, dropped very very slightly. I added the hose water into the waterfall at a rate of 2 gallons a minute, and the temperature stayed right at 72 on the floating thermometer. I lost four goldfish, including two of the big ones (one of which was itchy as HELL yesterday), and most of the rest of the minnows. All the rest of the fish seem vaguely lethargic, including the koi, but not itchy like they were. Since the koi were politely floating around the surface, I dunked each of them individually in a salt bath, and since I had it, I brought the ogon with the inflamed lip into the house aquarium, to try and observe it and feed it in better conditions. *EDIT* My poor blue boy died! I'm SO upset. I really don't understand how I mass killed them all like this, with only an hour of the hose on trickle! I've changed the water a few times like that and it seemed like an approved method on koiphen and other forums. I went ahead and brought the yellow ogon inside as well, because I don't understand what's going on in my pond water!...See Moreccoombs1
