Sambucus branches die-back at random?

hunt4carl

My Sambucus niger 'Guincho Purple' is, and always has been,

a reasonably happy, healthy specimen, fully 12' tall now and almost as wide. In the last few years, an occassional

branch would aburptly (literally overnight) die-back; my

first reaction was panic - but I decided to "wait-and-see"

since the branches were only a few and quite random. My

patience "seems" to have paid off: the shrub continues to

thrive each season, flowering and fruiting fully, with the

occassional branch having to be cut out.

Now, two local friends are having similar reactions with

their shrubs; is this a common problem with elderberries

and not a threat, or is there something about their care

that needs to be corrected?
