Rut Roh! My garage-wintered roses are starting to leaf out =-O

Isn't that too early in my zone? We still have winter temps & lots of snow on the ground. I can't imagine keeping them alive & healthy in the garage for another month or two. =-O

This is where the little red wagon comes in. Mine have already been out and in, and it looks like they will be going out again at the end of the week.

Unless they are really leafed out, I don't usually bother getting them out there if they can't stay out at least one night. So long as I'm pretty sure it's going to stay above 28Â°F, or so, they stay out. End of the week forecast is for lows in the 30's, so it's time.

I've phoned the local greenhouse, and they recommend that I wait another month. Can't wait!!

I don't have any leaf growth on mine yet.

I only have 8 roses, although 4 of them are climbers. I'm probably going all out on them this winter since I only have 8 and I bought them all potted this spring. Climbers: Red Eden White Eden New Dawn Zephirine Drouhin Shrubs: Graham Thomas Pat Austin William Shakespeare 2000 Belinda's Dream I have a relatively large oak tree in front of my house, so I am going to use oak leaves. I'm going to buy some chicken wire or the equivalent of it, then prep with winter fertilizer, dump a bag of top soil over the base of the rose, then place the chicken wire around the rose as a cylinder than fill it with the oak leaves. For the climbers, most people don't do anything. However, I am going to protect them as well as I am in a pretty stingy environement still and Red and White Eden havn't been widely tested in my area. This depends on how large the roses get this year, but I am going to dump a bag of top soil over the base, then chicken wire and put oak leaves around the base as well for the first couple feet...or however wide of a roll of chicen wire I buy. The remainder of the canes, I will wrap in burlap together. I don't expect my climbers to be any taller than 5ft this year though, so it's not very labor intensive. If they were mature huge climber like New Dawn, I would probably just dump a bag of soil over the base and leave it as it is as it would be a mature plant.

gardens dress accordingly .. and go play in the dirt ... whats this nonsense about too dirty .. if you dont have mud in your eyebrows.. in your hair.. and gritting in your teeth.. you are a gardener.. btw ... this is the type of thing i would do at the very last.. just before heading into to the laundry room to throw everything i was wearing in the washer ... and then up to the shower ... its not the job you want to do first .. lol .. of course.. i only lander the garden clothes.. when they stand up in the corner by themselves because there is so much dirt encrusted on them .. lol .. when too encrusted.. its hard to bend your knees.. lol ... ken

It may not have been anything you did or didn't do. As you said, roses do not like to be inside. Try putting a saucer of water next to them, not under them, to raise the humidity around them. And get some additional light. And fluorescent lamp will do. Don't fertilize them any more now until the start to leaf out again. No guarantee on any of this but it could help. If you get more like this next season try sinking the pots into the soil for the winter. They may do better just going dormant outside.

Sorry to be reviving an old thread, but I had some additional questions. First time I've posted on here; I've been primarily on the kitchen and bath forums. We live in Eastern WA state - zone 6a. We have had roses in containers that we overwinter with varying levels of success for the last 5 or 6 years. Our property is in unfenced deer country, but I really wanted some roses and they actually won't come on the front deck (amazingly). This is the first year that we haven't placed our roses in our unheated, uninsulated detached garage. We have them up off the deck ,in a sort of protected corner, with insulation around the pots themselves. I have watered them about once a month. My question is this: these roses, and I have only 2, never actually seem to go dormant. Even before when I would put them in the garage for the winter, they seemed to retain their leaves. This year I was sure I'd see the leaves get brown and fall off, since they were outside, but that hasn't really happened. It appears to me that I haven't killed them quite yet and I'd like to keep it that way. Here's what they look like right now: When we first started doing this, we successfully kept them for at least 3 or 4 seasons. Then, one year both bushes died. We replaced them, not with identical varieties, and the next year (maybe 2 years ago?) one died and one didn't. I've never pruned in the fall, having read it's better not to. Sorry this post is so long, and again I'm not sure I have a problem (yet), but was just wondering if anyone had any insight. The information in the posts above has been very helpful. Thanks.

Those in my unheated greenhouse are beginning to leaf out. Temps in it get close to that outside. Many of the 140 rooted cuttings I picked up last Thursday from Great Lakes Roses in Michigan were leafed out and they seem to be doing fine. With temps forcast into the 40s later this week, you can begin the daily transfer from inside to outside and back again if temps are forcast to get below freezing. Remember, new spring growth contains lots of sugars that act as a natural antifreeze so as mad_gallica stated they can handle temps to 28 degrees.

Wow thanks folks! I didn't realize that about the natural sugars. That's why I love this board. It was soooo exciting to see the little arm buds & tiny leaflets.

I have 12 new bands that I received the other day. I kept them in for 2 days because we had very cold and windy weather. But I put them out yesterday and left them out last night. It got down to about 30. I have them on the front porch so they are not getting direct sun. That can be very strong here this time of year.

This is a great thread! I have about 10 roses in the garage and I know the time is getting closer. Last year I remember that my mother became ill in March and I was too busy to worry about schlepping the roses in and out. In April I took them out and all did great! I love Spring!

Looks like I will be bringing home my roses from Dad's unheated greenhouse pretty soon from the sounds of this forum. Then I can play with them to my heart's content. I have coffee grounds and banana peels waiting for them. (eat up mehearties yo-ho!)

I haven't been a fan of Scooby Doo in 30 years, but now my kid is, so Scooby is back in the vocabulary. lol

One little rose died in the garage over the winter. Booo hoooooo. I always forget the sad part of spring.
