Orange recommendation?

Yup. Orange.

I have this orange garden. Orange to copper, I guess, with a fabulous ninebark 'Coppertina' as a focal point.

On the edge of the garden and drive, I've had several trees. A 'Crimson Sentry' maple, a lovely weeping, crimson something birch, and a rose of Sharon.

I cannot figure out what's going on, because each of these has died. It is pretty dry, although everything around these are thriving. Iris, Nandina, phlox, crape myrtles, mums, 'Red Rooster' carex, etc.

I've gotten into shrubs recently and can't get enough of the interesting variations. I have a Thulga (?) 'Rheingold' and love its color, but am bored with its shape. (Anyone wanna trade?). I'd like to find something interesting, tall, hopefully column-ish, to replace put in this evidently difficult spot.

Oh - extremely hot, dry, baking sun. Nice, loam with a small sand element, so on the slight slope, the drainage is great. I use soaker hoses.

Does anyone have any ideas?

perennial wallflowers come to mind. when I lived in zone 8 Portland OR (and I'm tring to remember), I believe they were woody perennials.

Passionflower vines on trellises. I'm sure there's an orange one somewhere, I don't know though.

There's of course the rampant trumpet vine.

Thanks rosies--- you guys always cheer one up, and I appreciate all the feed-back....I did have Easy Does It, Amber.. it was here for one winter period... sometimes I wonder if the rose is just a weak-one to start with, I also had Tropicana and it gradually went bye-bye..I now have Cl. Joseph's Coat which has hardly grown at all in the 2 years, but it hasn't died either, so I keep nursing it along and keep a jug of MG nearby to encourage it which does seem to help...Brandy was gorgeous but didn't last....Just Joey the same....I lost so many last Fall due to canker and that may have contributed, I lost 5 Don Juans, now Dr. Manners is working to replace them but they only have 1 'mother' plant at the College so it takes time..... my closest orange is Crepuscule, one is own-root and the other is on Fort., both are like gangbusters... also Julia Child does fantastic, but not really orange but close enough... maybe I'll try Pat Austin, I do have several of the Austins both grafted and own-root, they seem to be doing well....Amber it would be great to meet you, and all the other 'rosies' out there, I'd love to show you-all my attempt at rose-gardening, my E-mail addy is in the my-page, I think, and then I can give you my phone-#... do any of you go to the Central Fla. Heritage Rose Society meetings in Lakeland, at Fla. Southern College ?? they are having one more meeting before the summer break, on May 5 Sunday at. 2:30 in the Citrus Bldg. I know some from GW go... usually they meet the second Sunday of the month but May has Mother's Day so we set it up one week earlier... then we are off until the Fall.... a bonus is walking thru' all the rose-gardens there, hundreds and hundreds of gorgeous mostly OGRs, and talking with some very knowledgeable growers, and maybe getting to tour the greenhouses.. well worth the time... thanks again, sally

That's the thing about rot in trees-it does not indicate a lack of health at all. Trees could be thought of as cones, a new cone growing over the top of the old one each growing season (under the bark). As such, what happens on the inside, the old heartwood, is of little consequence to tree health. I'm sure we've all seen hollow trees that leaf out beautifully, year after year. I'm not going to blast the suggestion of such items as orange oil for use a s a wound dressing in trees, simply because there always exists the possibility that a new technique will come along that holds promise. But I will say, if trees evolved in such a manner that, when a branch was shed, whether by wind, mechanical injury, normal senescence, herbivory by some critter, they needed human intervention......well, to put it very simply, they would NOT have evolved. I think that limbs on that maple were removed by previous owners who had no knowledge of proper technique. The branch collar was cut into/removed entirely, or so it looks to my eyes, and at each point where this occurred is now a pocket of decay right down through the center of where that branch used to be. It happens all the time. That's one type of injury for which the tree cannot do much, the spread of decay though the vertical dimension being the most difficult for it to wall off, which BTW is precisely why so many hollow trees exist. +oM

Kind of going off topic, but since the OP is listening to your comments about Trovita, I'll reply. Yeah Navel orange can be juiced but the "soon after" turns bitter for me is "less than 2 hours". I also like Trovita, but Wash Navel is a step above IMO -- but they are both good choices. I was excited for my first large crop off my in-ground Trovita tree, b/c I wanted BOTH fresh and juicing oranges. I grew up w/oranges and can peel them by hand in less than 3 seconds (I'll gorge a small one down in the same time if I'm hungry ;-) But alas Trovita DO also experience the same bitterness when juiced. In less than 4 hours my Trovita juice starts to turn, by the next day it is worthless. It being labeled for "eating fresh and juice" is a lie if you ask me. Eric, Honestly, the best gifted citrus tree is the one the recipient loves to eat. Like gifted animals (for pets), how much one is willing to care for it is dependent on their own preferences for that particular variety. Our advice is limited to our preferences. For oranges, "very sweet and good for juicing" as you've requested is pretty much Valencia. If he likes a hint of berry flavor, you can look at the blood oranges. Some people hate the idea. Or better yet go with Mandarins -- Tango (newer seedless version W.Murcott), Page, and Gold Nugget are very sweet and seedless (mostly). Any of those three mandarins would be sweet like oranges are. Or even better try a cocktail tree mixing some of the above.

Leebea Orange Crush put out the first bloom today. We have 2 large clumps, and they are loaded with scapes. If the weather cooperates, in a week or so, we'll have many, many blooms. I don't know how cold hardy this daylily is, but I hope you have good luck with it. Avedon

Thanks for the thoughts, but it's a replacing a tree. there's nothing to vine it around, and sticking something in the middle of where it is wouldn't work.

I have several gorgeous new honeysuckle varieties, orange, too, and trumpet vine. I love them, but they can't replace a tree!

I knew this would be a toughie.
I've got a 'Rheingold' but it only achieves 5-6' and is globular. I'll let you know if I find anyting!

I'm not sure if this would work for you or not, but it seems to me one of the complimentary colors to orange/copper would be the dark burgundy red-purple of a purple smoke tree/bush (Cotinus spp.) Assuming it will grow in the conditions you have (I suspect it, but am by no means certain), is that something you'd consider?

Cotinus aka "purple smoke tree". I don't know enough to be sure it would grow in your conditions, although I suspect it. The leaves are a dark burgundy red-purple, which is probably a complimentary color to your garden's color scheme.

That's a good idea, guys. I have a lovely smoke tree. It's a royal something. Escapes me at the moment.

Poor thing. I've moved it every year for 4 years. I think I outta get another one.

The dark purple of the smoke bush would replace the gorgeous burgundy birch that's crapped out. I should go look at the names.

You can also train a trumpet vine into a tree-form just as is done with wisteria. Stake for a trunk to your desired heigth and then prune it as you would a weeping cherry for example.

Honeysuckle shrubs... although you need a tree I see.
There are of course for orange color, evergreen forms of Wallflower and are they cool...

About the closest I can come for a beautiful orange tree is: Mountain Ash. Sorbus something.

Dax, I didn't know that about Trumpet Vine, but in retrospect, of course. I might just find a way in another spot!

maybe pomegranate, punica granatum. will be marginally hardy in your area, esp. for fruiting, but literature says can be grown as far north as washington, d.c.
the flowers of most are bright orange-red and showy, although there are white and pink flowered forms. if left unpruned, they will be upright, vase-shaped.
a bonus would be the interesting fruit that they produce.

I'm south of DC (35 minutes on a good day) but due to atmospheric conditions, I'm almost a zone's difference away.

I wouldn't recommend Mountain Ash. The fruits are the right color, but I grew up with it just north of the Delaware border and it wasn't really all that happy there. As you check it out, make sure you examine its tolerance for humid heat. I believe at least the European species prefers a cooler summer than the DC area offers. If the University of Maryland has an extension site you can go to (or an extension agent you can call for a recommendation about Mt. Ash) I would most certainly do that to find out what they say. If the National Arboretum offers advice to the public you should check them out, too.
