Tiger Eyes sumac

You are probably going to shudder at the news that I planted a Tiger Eyes sumac today. (gulp) I don't want more than one nor have the space for any colonizing but am aware that it is the nature of these shrubs to sucker.

Since we will be mowing around it constantly, is that sufficient for keeping the suckers in check? There is a mobile home only about 4' away from it....could it reach out as far as under that and cause trouble? Or would it be better to dig it up now and put it way out in the back yard?

Thanks for any thoughts on this!!

Wow.
I haven't had any trouble with suckering!

What I did learn the hard way is this is one of those shrubs that you can't water. As a matter of fact, stomping on the ground around it, swearing at it, taunting it with the hose? It all works to keep it growing well.

I watered mine last year and it got all mouldy and died. Perhaps that was why there weren't any suckers?

did you have a hard frost or freeze after it flushed out its leaves .. which may have looked normal until the real heat hit??? hard to kill anything that suckers like a sumac ... ken

Sumac suckers dramatically. I have the cutleaf staghorn, and it sends out suckers about 30 feet away from the edge of the original bed. I want the Tiger Eye, just saw it this spring, but am waiting for the mid=summer sales. I have many deer and rabbit issues, but they have never bothered my sumac. Must be other things in my yard taste better.

Thanks, Christine. I've been holding onto the receipt so I can go back for the guarantee if the plant is dead, something I'm not organized enough to do for long. I'll do an observe this weekend and see if there are buds. I'll go out and compare the plant to my jackass "alone in the universe" neighbors who just got an eight month old, poorly socialized part pitbull. Just the perfect dog for them. That should scare the plant into leaf if anything can. See you at the swap I hope.
