I think they should have stayed out where they were. Most foxgloves overwinter fine in your zone. In fact that is what they are supposed to do. Grow in the summer and fall then overwinter and bloom the next year. But now that you have disturbed the roots they may have a harder time. Why not plant half back outside and try to keep the rest inside and you can do a science experiment. Good Luck and have fun!

Thank you both for the feedback. I'll replant some outside to see what happens and I will also hang a light over the rest in my basement with a timer. Is 6 hours enough direct light? I'm guessing that I've disturbed their evolution so does this mean that they won't be flowering this summer? Ah, tha hell with it, I'll look at it as a learning experience. Thanks!!

It depends on variety but some will bloom next summer with early start. Put your lights very low above seedlings and watch what happens- if they look like they way too leggy and struggly- give more light. Those things depend on type of your bulbs, reflection, temps in the room etc. I think that for shade tolerant variety like foxglove 6 hrs could be plenty. I usually run majority of my seeds on 12- 16 hrs schedule though.

If you have a hardy annual foxglove I would consider protection from winter elements in your zone.

However there are many species that are biennials even perennials to zone 4, and actually prefer a winter rest before bloom. I find the strongest blooms from these species are from a late summer, fall start. Then allowed a winter dormancy, and blooming the following summer.

To really know exactly what to do the species, cultivar, or description would be helpful.

Just remember that foxgloves do not always respond well from transplanting. We sow ours in plug trays and then transplant up into bigger pots. This results in less down time, from standard flat sowings. Cool days and warm soil encourages stronger root production from a foxglove.

When I discovered them, 4 were well over 6" in height. The rest were 3-4"H and smaller. They are either Camelot or Foxy Foxgloves, not sure. I bought 2 of them 1 yr 1/2 ago and left them in their store bought containers because I had to make room in my planting beds. This is the location where the seeds fell, thus the 9 I dug up. That seems like an awefully long time for the seeds to germinate and grow but hey, I'm not complaining, in fact I'm saving over $35 at the nursery. If they make it. :)

It's been way to cold out to plant half of them so they are still sitting on my windowsills.
