odd question, but could really use the advice

...i figured this was the best place to ask.

i am shooting a movie in which i need it to "rain" inside of a house. my best idea so far, besides a hose or a sprinkler system was rigging up a soaker hose or a drip tape to allow it to look like rain.

my question is...will it "drip" very fast or really slowly? even if i have all 25 feet in one area...also...if i had high water pressure in a soaker hose for example, would it rain "faster" than if it had low pressure?

any advice would be great.

Depends on if you want a gentle,heavy or light rain. Can't be sprinkler...like pop-ups for lawns because you'd probably be able to see the circular pattern of the drops,soakers would just drip....maybe the flat type hose/sprinklers w/holes punched at intervals....or even a mister?

Sorry ,female in me kicks in and wonders whose gonna clean up the mess afterwards....LOL

eHow says This rain machine is easy and inexpensive to make.

Directors commentaries on movies on DVD usually avoid the subject but those who do speak of it say there is no good substitute for real rain.

Stephanie, first thing, don't get frustrated or give up. I lost nearly half the roses I planted the first year. Sometimes it's nothing you do, it's the plant. You didn't specify if you had potted or bare root roses. Or where you bought them. If you bought bare root in bags in Home Depot or Costo, then forget it, it's the roses, not you. They are notoriously bad news. I succumbed this year and bought two and they are goners already. These usually come with canker already so they are pretty much DOA when you buy them. If they were bare roots from a reputable vendor, then soaking will help tremendously. Also keeping the newly planted rose well watered and misting the canes helps as well. I don't mound my roses, because I'm in a warmer zone, but some people say it helps. Also, some sun protection may help if they are in all full sun. Basically a bare root rose is asleep and then gets shocked to life by being thawed out, shipped across the country, then plunked into the ground and has hot sun beating on it all day long. That doesn't sound like fun to me! So they are usually slow to start and some don't make it. That's why I like to soak them in a bucket for at least a week. They can wake up in nice warm water (in the shade) and many of them 'break dormancy' and begin to leaf out in the bucket. That means when they are planted, they are somewhat awake and have a lot of moisture in their canes to hopefully help them make it through the first few weeks while they are building their root system in their new home. Roses are hardy, brand new roses need some babying.

Odd Question: Do you use lighting during the day?

Unless it's really dark/cloudy outside, we don't really need lights on during the day except in the cooking part of our kitchen. While it does get some light from windows on the north and west wall during the day, and probably doesn't need lights on when in there, we usually do turn on at least one light when we are in there during the day. Unfortunately, the south wall has most of our cabinetry plus our stove and fridge, and it directly faces our neighbor's house/kitchen window, so we don't have any windows on that wall which would bring a ton of light. If we ever get around to remodeling it, I want to add at least one window on that wall - even just one would add a lot of light. Today it's cloudy but still kind of bright outside, but the kitchen light is on - mainly b/c my kids never turn it off! If i'm home alone, I only turn it on if I'm actually in there. No other lights on in the house at the moment though. Our family room has 10 windows on three walls and the other "wall" is a huge opening to our eating area of the kitchen, so that room gets a ton of natural lighting. Aside from the kitchen, the only other "dark" room in the house is my boys' bedroom but even still, it has a south facing window so gets enough light during the day, plus they are rarely in there during the day anyway - at school! I have one light in our living room on a timer in the winter - the window faces the front street side, right near the front door. We don't really use that room much at night, but I think it makes the house look more welcoming from the outside, plus it means no one coming home alone (esp my kids) enters into a completely dark house.

I appreciate the concern but honestly I was venting. Just about life and talking/askIng about home building...I thought that is what this place is for. I realize after reading some more threads there are a lot of Negative Nancys on here. Not particularly just my discussion. Has it always been like that on here? Unsolicited advice? Professional critique from lay persons? I’m new here so idk. Yall look like sweet little grandmas compared to some other threads I have read. As for my situation It’s not like we decided last week to just throw a house up. We have planned till the cows come home and made changes just like anyone else. My mom Is doing great, everyone’s job can be stressful. My “in a mess” is with finalizing the exterior. Again of course I have ideas and know what I like. Of course my husband would pause if I asked. I absolutely can take it to someone and pay and will if I don’t feel absolutely confident in a final choice. I just thought I might get lucky and find some genius in here who would be a hero. I think I vented too much and expected/asked too much. Lol. I will update my final choice and maybe throw in a pic of Mom later so y’all can see how adorable she is.

you could try a drip irrigation system with varied emitters in the hose. You start with a solid drip irrigation hose and then buy some 1/2 gallon per hour emmitters some 1 gallon per hour emitters, some 2 gallon per hour emitters etc. this would give you diffenent amounts coming out of each emitter. I don't know if the drops are bigger or if they come more frequently on the 2 gallon emitters. just a thought. Good luck

Adjusting the water pressure on a drip irrigation system is relatively easy by using a pressure regulator on the spigot. Most soaker hoses come (in the ones that I have anyway) with a blue round rubber pressure regulator in the female end of the hoses. The blue regulator has a hole in it that acts like a regulator. If the current hole doesn't produce enough rainfall, drill it out and make it larger. Then again, you could regulate the amount of rainfall by adjusting the flow out of the spigot. Just a few ideas.

Most of the soaker hoses I've used, the higher you turn up the water, the more the water tends to shoot out in direct spray jets from the myraid slightly-larger-than-regulation holes that there tend to be. If that makes any sense at all. I've had some success in the past rectifying this by covering said holes with electrical tape, but there are usually quite a few. Hence, your 'hard rain' would be interspersed with tiny shooting jets of water in various spots. Also, in my limited experience, water coming off of a soaker hose tends more to run down the length of the soaker hose and eventually drip off, rather than falling in neat, patterned 'raindrop' style drips. Though I admit to never really observing it in an elevated state with this thought in mind.
