columbine seeds..how 'old' is old?

Hi. I collected a lot of columbine seed this season. Some were open pollinated, many were crosses. I have read that fresh seeds need a period of cold in order to germinate. I plan to winter sow these. I also have unopened seed packets from last year that I would like to sow. I've heard that 'old' columbine seeds do not require a cold period. So how 'old' is old? If possible, I would like to sow these indoors, with bottom heat, and light. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, SAM
