i don't know if this is allowed or not, i suppose it'll be removed and i'll be notified if it's not. anyway...

i just started a yahoo group to purchase some wholesale plugs from terra nova and a few other places. we have a minimum to meet and i thought i'd stop by here and invite anyone interested to join and at least take a look around. i'll answer questions etc from the group instead of doing anything here.

Will you guys be getting any heucheras or echinaceas. Those would really be the only things I'm interested in from Terra Nova right now. Also, would it be possible for us to maybe send you a couple of dollars and receive some of the plugs (not all of them, just a couple) in exchange??

I'd be interested in some liners, but don't know how my hostas have done overwinter yet. Got fifty or so varieties, but slow to take off. Probably could divide Striptease, definitely have Halcyon, have Lemonlime...would need to know what you're looking for so I could poke around. Have white sweet woodruff, European Ginger. I also have around forty named varieties of dahlia tubers, if you're interested. I can email you names with image links to each. I'd prefer to trade these, as they need new homes soon.

"The only real way to trial these plants in every condition in different parts of the country is to release the plant." It's true that you can't on a practical basis plan for every possible microclimatic variation or trial a plant in all 50 states. But if (as a general example) you're releasing a plant described as hardy from zone 4 through zone 9, you need to have tested its performance and know that it has withstood -30F and done well, and at the other extreme, performed creditably in mild as well as hot (dry or humid) conditions in zone 9 climates. The more experience you have, the less you are inclined to trust descriptions of new plant releases and to be slow to jump on bandwagons. Those who get victimized are often gardeners who must have the latest and greatest offerings, or new gardeners with less well-developed skepticism. "Buyer beware" is still inadequate to cover these situations. If you follow good cultural practices and a plant does not conform to advertised description (and if others report similar problems), you should get a refund or credit from the seller.

Looks like Terra Nova is included in the echie plug co op (echies, heuchera, etc.) that they have been organizing on cubits.org with a ship date of May 30. Forgive me for being OT as I know you are asking about a gw co op, which may well be around. Cubits requires the same kind of simple, free registration as gw. If you are interested the guy says to e-mail him through the cubits website (cmail) to get the list. Register then click on his screenname to cmail him, be sure to include your e-mail address, he will send you the list, then post what you want to order. g'day snoggerboy, yep where you can add in charcoal is is going to be of a help for most of us that is due to accident more than planning, also simply recycling all organic matter through the growing area will give the same results for the plants, and no smoke or fire needed. coppicing a pristene forest simply won't work as damage to other plant life and soil compaction/errosion will rule supreme and the forest will suffer anyway. but those who are advocating slash and burn are talking clear fell scorched earth. also as it is over here and be no different anywhere else, collecting piles of felled timber even for chipping/charcoaling purposes won't happen as this is a much more labour intensive process it is easier for those who have the desire to simply cut it all down and take what they want(so this char charcoal whatever issue will add another wonton waste along with wood chipping our forest this adds in). anything else will add to their cost. over here the trucks for the chip factory drive past pliles of dead felled trees but they aren't interested so eventually these trees get burn where they lay. and in a viable bio-diversity forest any plant/tree that dies should be left there as it becomes part of the recycle process and also becomes habitat for fauna that lives there. also in slash and burn process i figure the twigs and leaves are discarded to serve no purpose. don't think we need anymore reasons to have our forests decimated. and carbon sequencing well that's another furphy, think it out, if we throw money at something it will go away? not holding me breathe on this one either. len

TNN only has about 10 varieties of echinacea right now that aren't already sold out.

David,have you been posting at all, or just reading quietly? I used to follow your posts avidly, especially when you posted pictures. Can you update us on your "new" gardens and the woodland path? Every once in a while someone puts your photos up here and hearts melt across the United States.

You advice about moving a garden when the gardener moves is still re-posted when someone writes with plans to pack up their garden with the furniture.

Here in New England, and where you are as well, winter will drag on for another month. Cheer us up with new revelations!

If anybody is interested in getting any seedling hellebores from hand-pollinated crosses of the wonderful hellebores from NW Garden Nursery in Eugene OR let me know. This is the premier hellebore nursery in the US, their plants are beautiful. They only sell singles directly, doubles are all through TN and Walters Gardens. Here is a link to the nursery below.
