Advice on Pomegranate tree planting-Help!

Help! I just received my 5-6 ft Angel red pomegranate tree (about a month late) and I am trying to decide what to do with it. I am in zone 8, and we are expecting a freeze (28F) in 2 days. Should I plant it now before the freeze hits? Should I keep it in my garage with the roots watered until it warms up this weekend? Or should I not even plant it since it is so far into the fall and pot it until spring. I have spent hours searching the web and have not found a clear answer. Thanks so much for your help!!

There's no reason at all not to plant it as soon as you can. The sooner you get it in the ground, the happier the plant will be. It will not suffer at all from being planted just before the freeze assuming it's properly hardened off.

otoh, here in dallas i've planted a dozen poms, & i never plant them in the fall. every 3-4 years we have a killer freeze & if the pom's not protected it can be killed to the ground, or even croak altogether. i plant in the spring so it can grow & adjust & get thicker before the winter freeze.

but since you already have the pom, i don't know what i'd do in your shoes. sorry :-(

Patience.......... Spring of 2000 I purchased a three foot scrawny pomegranate from the California Rare Fruit Growers booth at their Green Scene garden show. It had a typewritten tag that said the variety was "Juan" and it came from Mexico. Over the years I've wanted to find out who donated this big non bearing plant to the group for sale. Now, seven years later, for the first time ever, we have beautiful, large, green fruits. The color was quite unexpected but well worth the wait. The literature says may take two to three years to fruit. The Ambrosia we have fruited at two years and 1 1/2 ft tall. But then there are some that take 7, 8 years. This is a good discussion. I also planted a new pomegranate tree about three weeks ago. Our zone here is 10 (San Diego). The pomegranate's leaves are starting to turn yellow. I wonder if this is the normal yellowing for a deciduous tree or if there are some pests involved. Here are some photos: It looks like there are clearly some ants. I am new to growing fruit trees, but have read that ants are sometimes a sign of other infestations and that ants can actually encourage other infestations. Any ideas about what are the little green/brown spheres that seem to interest the ants in the last photo? Any ideas or suggestions for optimizing the health of this tree?

I have a ten year old on the coast. Once or twice per winter we get 32. You can lightly prune at any time. I prune mine after the leaves have all fallen. on the second tree how many trunks? I think two or three are ideal. nice looking trees. with some pruning education you could shape them into some gorgeous trees. fruit grows on new growth. i guess I just have to show mine too. the fruit is just now ripening.

Two very different possibilties: Likely root-bound and not able to properly take up any amount of applied water, note that soil has been pushed up to pot rim. Try re-potting in a larger container. If possible completely dunk the unpotted plant (if there are dry soil pockets) in a larger container (garbage can, etc.) up to the soil line before repotting, until all air bubbles cease the the roots and soil are very heavy. If possible, keep the pot largely in the shade. If, on the other hand, the watered plant is very heavy in its pot, and poking deeply in the soil reveals moisture, then the plant has been overwatered. Google potted+pomegranate+overwatering. If the deep poking encounters more roots than soil, then back to the larger pot advice. The proper watering/care of any large potted plant is an art.

Is it a small seedling or recently rooted cutting? If not, I can't imagine why it wouldn't make it through the winter in zone 8 (barring a very unusually cold winter). I have planted poms in the fall, here in zone 6b/7, without winter damage. If you're really concerned, mulch it well. Then, even if the top did get hit, it should come back from the roots. I'd bet that it has a much better chance of survival if planted out (assuming it's properly hardened off) than if it's kept in the garage.
