tall, common front yard tree in S. California

I've seen this type of tree in front yards around San Diego County and Orange County for decades. I figured it's about time I learn what it is. It's fairly common (I saw two today while walking around Huntington Beach & Midway City, for example). It's quite tall, maybe 50 feet, it likes to grow into underground water pipes, the leaves are almost fern-like, and I seem to remember the leaves are sometimes orange, maybe after they fall off (although none of the trees I saw today had orange leaves). Anybody know what this is?
