Salvia 'Black and Blue'

Does anyone know if this Salvia hybrid produces seed and if they come true?

Hi Sharon,
I'm sure they will produce seed but I don't know whether they will come true. However, they most certainly will perennialize in your zone. I lived in Boston (zone6b) and had them come up after having a cold, wet winter. You can also dig up the roots which look like small dahlia tubers and overwinter them as you would dahlias...

Hi, I am in Virginia, too (Newport News) and my B&B came back from last year. You can take cuttings if you want to be sure. The plant will set seed but you probably won't get very many. There is quite a bit of information on this plant in the salvia forum.

I live in Alabama, I started out with a pot of the black and blue salvia about eight years ago and planted it. The hummingbirds loved it, so I bought it again the next year, then realized some leaves in the bed where the salvia had been planted the previous year were up and they looked a lot like leaves of the plant I had bought. Good reason, it was black and blue salvia. (I gave the other pot to a good friend). It is a true perennial here and has come up every year since the initial purchase.I took this picture this morning. I don't think it grows to this size everywhere, but it will likely be up to 3 to 5 feet tall by summer's end here and will have bloomed until frost or later. It shares this bed with Navajo Salvia and Hot Lips salvia, (Not so tall, but hold their own) but Black and Blue is what the hummers really love. Mine is in full sun. I occasionally pull out some from the edges to keep it from overflowing its place, but it is very easy to pull up...no problem. Enjoy your new plant. kay

In zone 6 mine always come back, but this last winter was the test and they did come back. It took mine several years to get big so I think keeping them is better than buying new. Have you tried chopping them down and covering with a deep pile of straw?

Let us know where you live, and in what zone. There are probably quite a few sages that will do well. Depending on those that failed, your soil type and exposure might also be useful information for suggestions. Then there are conditions like those on south central Texas, from San Antonio and Austin east to Houston, where ground water works best, because wells tap into an aquifer where salts from an ancient sea make the well water brackish.

From our experience in the last few years, most of the Black & Blue plants sold in the major nursery channels are from tissue cultured plants. It appears that the mother meristem tissue stock has declined, perhaps due to being grown in vitro for too long. The result are plants that grow with far less vigor than one would expect from this clone. This seems to be a nationwide issue. We have sought out alternate sources for new mother stock, but to date are not convinced that any of the these are free from the lack-of-vigor we have documented. So the short answer is no, I don't know right now where a B&B of old can be had. We are still evaluating a few sourced outside the typical channels and may be able to offer advice later in the season. For now we are pointing people to other Salvia guaranitica varieties.

Black and blue I don't think is a hybrid. It's a variety of S. guaranitica. Whether it comes true from seed, I don't know, but it should produce seeds.

It will definately produce seed but the seed will fall out soon after the flowers die so you need to get them early. I suggest taking stems and put im paper bags to dry out and separate later. I did not get seeds this year as I was sick during the time I needed to collect seed. Last year I collected 50plus on just a few plants.
