Garden Shows coming up

We have always gone to the Philadelphia Garden show, but are thinking we need a change and maybe try a show closer to home.

Has anyone been to the Hartford, New Jersey or Boston flower shows? I know that Philly has the "Queen" of all shows but a smaller quality show would be fine for us....

Any comments are appreciated!

Come on to Philly and enjoy yourself! It is not just a World Class Flower Show, it is a happening! This year's theme, 'Jazz It Up', will be a miniature New Orleans, replete with live Jazz music!

We have been working there each year for the past 10 years and look forward to going each time. Have already booked airfare and hotel.

We take 3 or 4, One each 35 mm, slide & print and digital and often a camcorder.
Have been to several different flower shows, including Chelsea, THE Flower Show WINS! :Rb

I like Boston (March 8-16) and, most years, even Providence, RI (February 21-24). RI is quite small, very do-able and low key. It was most fun back when Allen Haskell had his falling out with the Mass Hort Society and participated in the RI show instead.

I'm planning to make the trip to Philly this year, too, just waiting for the list of lectures. Tony Avent and Rick Darke are both speaking at the Boston show this year. RI has a couple of speakers and also has a "Garden/Landscape Designer Forum" at which people can consult individually with an LA about a project (you are encouraged to bring photos).

I go to the Philly show about every other year since I live so close. I went to the NJ show once but it didn't amount to very much and I guess I'm just spoiled. On the other hand,Philly is so crowded it almost takes the fun out of it which is why every other year is enough for me.

my son owns and operates a small gas heated organic green house and I have a friend who has a small orchard organically. both say they can sell everything they produce but many people (not all) expect to pay less for home produced goods. I think this is a matter of marketing because many small holders sell surplus at reduced rates..example; I buy local free range, organically fed, eggs for 3$$ doz. they are xlarge and very superior to store bought which charge 4.50$ for a comparable product. doesn't figure..i even offer to pay a fairer price but they won't go up. in 1980 I lived on a small acreage outside of Victoria bc and ran a little roadside stand. I kept a diary and marked in all sales and expenses. the bottom line was 18,000$. I still have the diary and read it occasionally, just as a reminder of the [possibilities. I'm almost 80 now so content myself with growing my own food, as far as possible, and smiling at the sun; but I know it's possible!!

I bought some Candy Onions too and got my free tree from MDC, a Loblolly Pine. I don't remember the Sunshine Hill booth. I wish I'd seen that. I went through pretty quickly. I just had a little time on Friday and almost didn't get to go at all. There was a place from Monett (I think) that had a big booth where Hummert's was last year on the east end. I can't remember the name but it said it was affiliated with another company in Joplin so maybe one of you will know. They had a bunch of seeds and some enormous elephant ear bulbs. Hummert's wasn't there so I assume they're still out of business but someone at another booth said they heard they're going to reopen in the spring. I wonder where. I think they need someone else to choose the location this time. I picked up a card for a place called Smiling Sun that sells native perennials. I'm looking forward to checking it out when they get their plants in this spring. They're close to the old stock yards on West Division in Springfield. They have a list on their website of the plants they're going to carry. It also says $6.99 a quart which is kinda high for my budget but maybe they'll run a sale or something. The booth for the Master Gardeners/FOG(?) had a crowd of people when I went by. Violet - I saw you but you looked pretty busy so I didn't say Hi. The big color photographs of butterflies and flowers looked great and made me anxious for the butterfly house to open. Have I mentioned that I want a sunroom? ; ) I also want a pond so I'm thinking I can just have some kind of pond/waterfall feature inside my sunroom and save money. lol That's my lottery dream. I am so sorry to hear of your bad experience! I remember Aloha T. Saying the plants would be on sale the last day. What a gyp! Upland is just too rich for my blood. Did you stop and talk to Mona Lisa? She only had cuttings, and it aounds to me like you bought only potted plants. Many of her cuttings she gave me bloomed late last summer after rooting in April, and I was quite pleased. I am glad to hear you stopped at JJ. I wish I could go there someday, but I hate the long drive from La Verne! Although I am glad I haven't gone, because I would bring back more plants! I have been to the show twice, last year and this year. I won't go again either. Last year I didn't spend much time. I have been to Upland Nursery on my own, and there plants are nice but way aver proced! This year I took the time to stop and look closely at every plumeria grower. Since I have decided to only buy named varieties from ow on, alot of the displays were unnamed, so I wasn"t interested. At least MonaLisa"s were all cuttings of named varieties. I have way too many now. I certainly don't need more! Good luck with your new plants No-Clue. By the way, you can post pictures using Photobucket, along with a few other websites. My DH just told me that he's taking me to the Philly show. I can't wait! I've been wanting to go there for the longest time!! I hear its an amazing show. Oh, I can't wait!

We live 20 minutes away and always go to the CT flower show in Hartford, which is from 2/21-2/24 this year. It is a small show, but there are lectures also and you can't beat smelling the dirt, flowers, and mulch in February. I don't know that I would travel more than a hour or 2 for it, but it's in my backyard. Every year I say this, but I don't know why RI and CT schedule the same dates for shows. I don't have time to go to both in the same w/end, but would go if they were separated.

If you can lay your hands on a copy of the magazine People, Places, and Plants (early spring 08) they have a nice summary of a goodly number of flower shows in New England and New York plus the Philly show.
