Trying to kill a 30 year old cherry tree....need help.

I have a sour cherry tree that is 2 feet in trunk diameter on my property and it would need a backhoe to remove it...which basically doesn't fit into the yard. Tree was huge, impossible to spray so I stumped it. I was told that diesel fuel applied onto the fresh cut by brush would kill the stump that is left in the ground, is that true?

if not what other poisons can i apply that will kill the stump.

I once used an expensive solution called "Trident" in Greece that worked amazing in killing wild deep rooted shrubs. Don't know what is available in North America.

I was told by someone to "paint" some concentrated "roundup" in with a brush on the flat surface(stump)that is left of the cherry tree. Making sure that the stump absorbs quite a bit of it.

There are different "roundup" types though, do I need the "stump remover" kind or will the regular concentrated roundup do the job also?

What about "total wipe out" made by Wilson....its almost the same chemical as "roundup"

The active ingredients in Round-Up should do it--use the concentrated solution, 40% or more active ingredient, and don't dilute, as will stump killers that contain phenoxy herbicides, although I'm not sure if any of them will be effective if applied in the winter when the tree is fully dormant.

Too bad the tree had to go. Any chance, now that it has been stumped, to let it regrow and keep it pruned within your space limits? If you liked the cherries, that would be a great way to "replace" the old one.

Oh dear! I just planted a holly TREE (female) away from the house far enough that I can see it from the deck. I love the look of a nice holly TREE. In the French Quarter of New Orleans, that is the tree planted along the streets in those small planting pockets, they look great, they grow straight, they keep their leaves all year, and they are hard to kill....sounds good to me. BUT, at the house we had on the river (destroyed by Katrina), there were holly shrubs with trunks about 5" diameter, kept the size of the large camellias also planted near the house. All of these survived the salty flood waters without a stutter. They are still on the vacant lot, and far be it from me to try to dig them up. :) All your experiences remind me of the agony we are going through trying to rid ourselves of some darned CAMPHOR TREES. Those roots WILL come back. Each seed eaten by a bird will be pooped into the lawn somewhere, and I make sure I pull up seedlings before we cut the grass each week. One camphor tree we had to use the car to extract the root. We used a chain attached to the trailer hitch. As a boat captain, I can tell you DO NOT GET IN THE PATH OF A LINE UNDER TENSION...especially if it is NYLON. Like a bullwhip, they can come back on you and remove an arm or eye or (as happened to a man offshore) a head. It is very dangerous to keep increasing tension on a line. So just apply SO MUCH, and stay off to one side neither in front of nor behind the direction of pull. A well sharpened pickax (adz if you are from the nawth) can eat through a lot of wood.

Ok..First of all, the curse of the lemon meyer!! But have no fear, you can prevail! Immediately, I mean immediately, I would get that plant out of the soil ASAP.... That soil your using, has been the DEATH of all mine when I first began. It holds way too much water, a perched water table which citrus HATE in our growing regions, no matter what the product claims, and it holds way to much residue fertilizer salts that can turn leaf tips brown. Your roots should look a healthy white. Take a peak while you are add it, if not, it is killing your tree fast. Therefore the branches dying..Root rot kills the branches, but first the leaves drop, usually green and or yellow..The leafs drop green if under watered and root damaged has taken hold.. Is there a way you can STRAIN out all the peat moss in that soilless mix you bought? Please let me know..I will give you a great idea? Do you have quick access to good nursery mix? You live in Ohio? You need to keep your tree on the dry side with such a lack of sunlight, and make sure it absolutely needs watering before you do it again.. Let us leave it at here, until you change the soil..Nothing else is going to help it, until you first take this step. That soilless mix is junk! Sorry..:-( Let me know when you have done the first step, and or if you want too.. I will then guide you from there..You NEED to put that plant in a FAST draining soilless mix, that dries out rather rapidly. One that is porous and provides great gas exchange after each watering. One that allows the salts to flush out at each watering. One that allows you to feed at every watering. One that provides oxygen and does not suffocate the roots..Does not take too long to dry out, or compact:-) There might still be hope. How much sun does it get? How are the temps? What size, kind of pot is it in? How long has it been taking the soil mix to dry out? What kind of water do you provide it with? Do you use vinager? What kind of analysis, or how high is the ph of your water? What are your cultural habits in detail.. Mike

This story is beyond horrible; I too feel awful for the parents and families from both sides. Of course this won't be the popular response, but I think it's wrong to set up petitions like this. I just don't believe children should be tried as adults because until they become of legal age "legally" they ARE children and "legally" they are entitled to the rights or protections provided to them because they aren't of legal age. Other than television or video games, children have no real concept of what the ramifications of their actions are. To try them as adults will also have no influence on other kids who have the potential to kill because kids aren't typically interested in these types of stories. If these boys really did what they are accused of doing then they are obviously in need of help. Entering a juvenile facility can provide some hope of rehabilitation that no adult facility could ever offer. As awful as this situation is, I think it's wrong to ask strangers who know little to nothing about a case to sign a petition insisting that two minors be tried as adults. The whole thing just feels like a public lynching to me. Let the people involved who really understand the case in it's entirety make the decisions they've been hired to make.

There are 2 garbage slide outs. One under each sink. The single can one is 19" wide and the double can is 16.5". Door drawer fronts and the face frames and cab boxes I bought came from cabinetmakers choice. http://cabinetmakerschoice.com/ You can buy these things from a lot of places. This place was very helpful and extremely responsive. In fact when a face frame arrived broken they sent me a new one withen a week. Building is straightforward IFF you have a table saw, router, chop saw and most importantly and pocket hole system. Prefinished plywood also helps. There are links on the web for how to make cabinets but the most important thing is the confidence to try. Keith

When the tree was "stumped" the roundup needed to applied IMMEDIATELY to be effective. The tree will seal off the cut surface in about six hours and the roundup will not be absorbed into the roots. Al

I realize this may be a dumb question but why kill it? Its not too tall to spray anymore and in a year or two it should be producing loads of fruit thats easy to harvest.

I don't like sour cherries...it was impossible to spray at that size. I brushed in the diesel fuel onto the stump about 20 hours after cutting. I never applied "round Up"...I have "total wipe out", available in my garage... which is almost the same thing....so I don't have to waste money.
Don't know if the 40% stuff is permitted for use in Ontario since the pesticide ban....they have diluted round up in 5L jugs at Lowe's now.

Tordon is labeled for tree and brush control any sprouts could be treated with this it will translocate to the root system.

Drill holes in the stump and pour them full of total wipe out. Then either plug the holes or cover the stump so no rain or snow will reach the stump for at least a year.

I would have left the stump for suckers come up and graft on it, in no time you could have 10 or 20 little trees, some you dig up and transplant.
This would give you allot of grafting exercises too.
