Search Function

Has anyone else problems with the search function on the forums here? It displays the results, but when you click on an article it brings up the "Whooops, I can't find this article" page. But when you search for the article by date it is still there... just wondering what's wrong.

There's an announcement about this on the forums' home pages. Like me, you probably don't bother to look at that part of the page, but I noticed another thread about the same thing, and it included a pointer to that announcement.

Yes! You are not alone!

I just posted about this in the Rose forum. A couple of people had some good tips for finding things...

You have to put the word followed by the forum name, for example, “Cleome in Roses”. The best way to do this is to open the forum then search in the top bar. The system will auto suggest the forum you are on. I attached an image hope it helps.

Given how much content Houzz has now, they really need to fix their search system. Even searching for their own articles (stories) is useless. I put in a search for "Heating off-grid house". The first article that showed up was "House Rule: Off With Your Shoes". Really? How exactly is that relevant? I'm sure Houzz has lots of relevant content to offer me, but if it's impossible to find, what's the point. I have much better luck searching through Google, which sometimes takes me back to Houzz, but often doesn't. Hey Houzz - you are losing your audience because of your crappy search queries.

Here’s another example. Again without going to Google or other similiar site. Rather, by typing gardenweb.com in the address box, and then entering the search term (in this case, “Mr. Lincoln”) in the search box at gardenweb.com. The first option presented is to search “Mr. Lincoln in Gardenweb“. Which yields: https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/query/%E2%80%98mr.-lincoln%E2%80%99/nqrw As you can see, over 2000 gardenweb Rose forum discussions on Mr. Lincoln, the rose. And you can arrange them by ”latest”, ”relevance”, ”unanswered” or ”popular”. Just like before.

I thought there used to be on each forum but I don't see one anywhere. Maybe the home page....I'm almost sure I tried that before and it came up with all sorts of extraneous crap.... I am positive there's a search function....

Hi Diggingthedirt and rosysunnygirl, thanks for your replies. Digginthedirt, I tried to find the announcemnet you mentioned, but no success, of course, I could use the search function...oh wait,.. just kidding :-). Seriously I tried to find the forum's homepage, but I wasn't successful either. It's probably me, but could you give me a hint? Rosysunnygirl, I followed your link (thanks a bunch for it), and it turns out I am basically doing the same thing folks suggested. I guess you can still get to the articles by doing a search here and than moving over to google with the correct title or other key words. A pain, but doable.

There is an announcement on many of the forums regarding the problem with the search function. It has been a problem for a couple of weeks, ever since they installed some new hardware.
They will eventually resolve the problem. Seems it's not a high priority item. :-(

The link to the forum home page is near the top of this page, just under the "banner" ad; in small print it says "Return to the Perennials Forum" (oh, there it is again near the bottom of the page, on the left hand side). The URL, if you'd like to bookmark it, at the link below.

You're right, the announcement isn't on the Perennials forum home page, I spotted it on the New England forum, at
http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/neweng/

BAH, instead of "updating" the hardware how about updating the forum to a form that is NOT 10 years out of date (or atleast add an edit button)

Here is an option for you all that will search the forum - requires more work but...

go to www.google.com and click on "Advanced Search"

in the 'Search' option, enter the word or phrase you want to search for.
in the 'Domain', if you want to search thru the entire gardenweb forum , enter http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forum

But if you just want to search the perennial forum, enter
http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/peren.

Click on 'Google Search' button and you will get results that you can read

If you use your own computer and you let Google keep your searches in the dropdown it doesn't need to be very complicated. E.g. here Google will keep google.com in domain and peren in some other keyword field. Then you can just open Google, enter a p and peren will drop down then go to domain and enter a g and google.com will drop down and enter your username somewhere and all your stuff from before the last crawl will appear. The last crawl is usually a day or two. It won't find what I am typing now if I search for it today.

the problem with their search engine is not new. I gave up long ago when I searched for a particular "item", let's say, and it directs me to a thread with 100 posts. And I'm expected to scroll and read each one? Some people like DTD actually have kept links to important or particularly interesting questions, and miracle of miracles, can actually find things. Otherwise, I just google it.
