I would not mow it at all unless it gets up to 5 inches. What you need to develop in the winter is deep roots so the grass can withstand the summer heat. Grass kept short will develop short roots. Tall grass has more chlorophyll to make more sugar and can develop deeper roots. Set your mower to the highest setting and wait until the grass is tall enough to mow. As for your fertilizer, I'm a little offbeat with most here. I think applying fertilizer along with the seed is a waste of money. Fertilizer does not work unless you have roots to suck it up. Seeds have no roots. In fact I don't think your roots do much of anything except absorb water until the grass gets tall enough to mow (5 inches). I always suggest you wait to apply fertilizer until the second time you mow (at 5 inches, not to beat this horse any more). By then you have some deep roots and your fertilizer will be absorbed as it moves deeper and deeper in to the soil. Getting back to the specifics of your question, it sound like you are mowing too low. Assuming it has been mowed once already, I would let it get taaaaall enough to mow once more and fertilize.

We are really getting tropical moisture here too. The windows have been fogged up a lot in the early morning hours (something I have seen a lot in Florida) because of the humidity. The air today was very humid. Actual temperatures where only in the upper 70s, but my thermometer recorded dew points that were also in the upper 70s. Got a good amount of rain and the plants are very happy and so am I since I didnt have to water them! Forecast calls for 90s. So far the average temperature for the month is about 92/72. Thats pretty warm especially since the first 3 days of the month were very cool (low temperatures were only in the low 60s!). Lowest night temperature in the forecast is - I think - 72F or 73F with most nights in the mid 70s. Pretty tropical to me especially with humid days in the 90s! Im expecting the best growth of the year in the next few weeks! -Alex

This is probably a question for the Container Gardening forum, but: Did you use anything to cover the holes in the bottom of the pot? These are often so large that soil can run out, so covering them while still allowing water to drain is a good idea. You can use a couple sheets of newspaper, or place a piece of a broken pot over the hole. If you used a proper potting soil and have drain holes, the pots will not stay 'too wet' for very long. It does sound like you'll have to add some potting soil to top them off though.

as far as i am concerned.. your only issue is winter heave ... if you move biggish clumps ... with a gob of soil.. and they wont move .. go for it .. if you were dividing into small plants.. that might heave out of the ground.. in late winter ... then you might have a problem ... and that is part of the issue with mini's ... and perhaps with new divisions.. presuming you bare root them at planting ... as to the excess water ... imo.. the only issue.. is the weight of the gob of dirt you plan on moving ... water is heavy .. lift properly ... ken
