Herbaceous twining climber that dies to the ground winter and grows to 8-10 feet each season. The plant itself isn't particularly interesting for foliage but the late blooms add interest to my Spring blooming viburnum, the blue is always welcome.

How prepared are you to water - lower leaves begin to yellow, look shabby, if this vine dries out in my coastal site. Explorers Garden, Hinkley:

Thank you for the info Morz8, it was very helpful. Aside for the need of ample moisture, would you say the growing requirements for this Aconitum are the same as others? It certainly does dry out over here too. ;-) I guess my getting it now depends on whether I can find an available moist spot.

CMK .... I quite enjoy both the foliage and late season flowers of this climbing vine. I have it situated on the west side of my house next to the foundation, a hot dry location in fertile well drained soil. It quickly scrambles up the support and tumbles down upon itself. During the summer, I keep it well watered and the foliage has remained looking pretty decent. Only problem I've encountered is with the bulbs sometimes rotting out in winter.

CMK ... it's a unique plant, definitely something different. The blooms are somewhat a dull greyish color and don't exactly knock my socks off, though are welcome just the same for their late season appearance.

Aconitum Hemsleyanum has blooms that are more than, quote, 'a dull greyish color'. A. Hemsleyanum is a vilot/blue color, A. Hemsleyanum 'Alba' is a brilliant white and A. Hemsleyanum 'red wine' is a rich dark red color. I have seen a pink colored one but I do not know what variety it is yet.

Aconite ... I realize I had fogotten one word "a dull 'blue' greyish color" ... anyways, it's definitely not a brightly colored flower, at least not for me, though nice just the same.

Funny, that this thread came up the very same day I had dug the tubers up from against the foundation of my home. There's been a lot of snow and the recent meltdown causing much moisture to penetrate that site, these tubers really resent winter wet and easily rot, thus I potted them up to store in the garage for the remainder of the winter ... man, the tubers were nicely sized!

This plant should be much more widely grown!

At the time I was planning on getting the plant latter in the spring... but by then it seems the nursery (Lazy S'S) stopped carrying it. ;-( Don't suppose anyone would happen to know of another online source for this Aconitum?? I searched but could only find UK nurseries selling it.

-twrosz, a grayish color actually sounds kind of neat, lol. You don't run into that color very often in the plant world. Heck, I would probably even buy a grayish colored one too if they had it ;-)

CMK ... I'm just bad at describing colors, it's probably a guy thing, lol. Also, maybe there's a degree of variation, especially if the plants have been grown from seed. Wish I had taken photos, such would be better than my lack of ability to describe the ... two tone blue / violet and greyish somewhat mottled papery looking blooms ... that's my best attempt for now, lol. I intend to replant these to the south side of my home, where they can clamber upon the front railing and be better seen.

I had obtained my plant from Fraser's Thimble Farms in BC Canada ... so, rather nearby to yourself and they ship to the USA!
