My poor Mrs. B.R. Cant!!!

We have winds here that are pretty rough, about 40 miles an hour right now. It is stormy looking....predicting bad thunderstorms.

I was out in the yard and noticed half of my Mrs. BR Cant looked...funny. She is perhaps 8 X 8 ft now. A few years back she was split in two by a falling pine tree. She recovered okay and was just covered head to toe with buds....just gorgeous.

I walked closer to her and noticed that half of her had broken off because of the high winds. Just broke my heart!!! I have half of her left...lop sided....the poor old dear! I hope it survives but just in case I put some cuttings into some sandy soil in hopes of rooting her.

I was so looking forward to her spring bloom. There had to be over 200 buds half of that just showing color and getting ready to pop open...how sad.

If its just split & not broken off completely, I would try duct taping the split stem together, and stake it, hoping it would heal. Hope it lives.

No...the poor thing broke slam off. It was laying across my drive way clear across the yard from the rose bush! I felt violated seeing her lay there across the driveway like that...LOL

That was a good thought though if it were only split into. Duck tape is a marvalous invention..hahaha

I no longer have General Gallieni (a bit too bright for my color scheme) but have the other two and think they are two of the finest tea roses. Both of mine are young and one is in too much shade (doing better now since part of a tree toppled over in the rain), but I have something to look forward to that will get better with every year. Patrick, I am in hot and humid south Louisiana and I can't recall hardly ever having problems with B.R. and blackspot. She is problably my favorite and have three bushes planted. She is one of my most dependable bloomers and in my opinion will fit the clean foliage requirement. Clint

Thanks...yes, I think it's probably the MRs. also. That is really interesting about Teri Tillman. I wrote to the Natchez City Cemetery last night but haven't heard from them. They have their own web site. It's great that they're taking care of the roses there...I thought they looked pretty good. It's an amazing cemetery, full of wrought iron around the plots, interesting statues, and of course graceful old roses and big trees. We go to Natchez every year once or twice to see family, so I hope to get a hold of one of those cemetery rose maps. Thanks for telling me about it! Linda

The 'Duchesse de Brabant" was a first runner up. About comparing personal observations with the results of the report, there is no possible comparison of the results of the referenced trial with results observed in a "good home." At least, that is certainly my impression of the trial. The roses were severely stress tested; the roses were not coddled in ANY way. As I read it: "Plants were provided with minimal amounts of water and fertilizer, no control for diseases and insects, and no grooming or deadheading." I think of it like being planted in a graveyard and subsequently being forgotten and untended for years. Surviving such conditions in Florida is quite a feat.

Rose tumbleweeds. Someone else described them that way in connection with rodent damage. It is not a pretty sight.

The winds are just awful, I guess it is that storm blowing in. Such trauma over seeing the poor Mrs laid out like that...LOL All those wilting limbs, all those un-opened fat buds, what a waste! But the other half of her is loaded with buds just about to open. I painted her wound with some kind of stuff my Dad painted on his trees when he cut a limb off. The poor old dear...I hope she recovers.

Oh, Deb, how terrible for you AND Mrs BR! Oh, I would feel awful. You definitely need some comfort and consolation!

jbcarr, that's a good thought for gardeners with BIG rose bushes. With weather the way it is, you never know when a big wind will come up and to have a big bush staked in advance is probably a good idea. A couple of pieces of rebar would work, ya think? Mine aren't big yet but when they are, I hope I remember this.

Deb, if the root is still moist, just replant it. It will come back. Next thing, go to Lowe's, HD or somewhere and buy a 16-feet piece of rebar. Cut it in half (or have them sell you two 8-feet pieces). Stake the roses by putting all but 3 feet of the rebar in the ground on either side and very securely tie the rose bush to the rebar.
