Good mail order roses source

Anyone know of a good mail order nursery? I'm looking for Bucks, Floribundas, and Heriloom/Antiques. And I'm moving soon and want roses at my new house!

Try Roses Unlimited, Antique Rose Emporium, or Ashdown Roses. I assume you're East Coast...their shipping isn't too bad.

I purchased two sets of Lady strain from Brecks two years ago. Seven of them are blooming this year (of ten). These are seedlings so they have some variability. I think this pic shows a pink and a red--my labels faded over time so I lost track of where I planted each type. I don't think any have been the really blue coloration. With their sale and coupon each one was under $3 each. Brent and Becky bulbs had a seedling mix this year (I don't remember the name)-- 6 for $40 but they are sold out. I was keeping my eye on them to try to get some during their 50% off sale. Two springs ago I purchased lilies and dahlias from B&Bs sale and they were incredibly floriferous the first year. Huge good quality bulbs. Bluestone has some attractive doubles but they are $12-$16 each. I purchased one randoms helleborus from bluestone 3 years ago and it is doing ok. Kentucky - I have been trying to figure out how to make some raised beds- or raised pots for the front yard landscaping. I don't want the look of basic garden vegetable beds for around the front of the house though. I thought maybe I could dig 2 ft hole and put a 2 ft raised planter on top of it, that night work. I iam also thinking about making very big planters (they are ridiculously expensive to buy. I am not sure about the aestetic for my front landscaping, but after considering many materials and my craftsmanship capabilities I have a plan. I will just have to try it and see how it looks. It could sit above ground, part in ground or in ground. My design is 2"x2" wood frame cube (or taller) dark cedar stained (ECO friendly and plant safe). Side and bottom panels of 1" hardware cloth. Inner lining of natural burlap. It would sit on 8" concrete blocks (in ground) with the hole side up foradditional drainage. Inside bottom filled with river rocks then another lining of burlap to contain the soil and the plant and finally mulch on top, of course. It would have to be big enough to allow 3'x3' space for the roots to grow in the soil area. Again, the aestetic is the probelm (aside form all the hard work and digging). I think it wold look descent but odd. To build a retaining wall for the space under the front window of the house would not look right eiterh at the height I need it to be. I think the real solution is to pay for a backhoe to come in here and excavate the clay and then have new soil put in - way too expensive for me right now. I do have one narrow strip on the west side of the front yard that I am lining with concrete blocks to build up that soil area. I plan on very tall trellises lining that hill (all my land is hilly) and covering them with rose and jasmine vines as a privacy fence. The probelm is the area is part shade - never sunny and that is not goo for any of the plants I like. I bought the Charles Darrow Hybrid Musk for that location as it is reported by others to grow and bloom very well in shade. I also have some varieties of Jasmine that might do in that spot. I am also thinking of Camelias and Sky Pencil Holly. My Hollies are about 1ft tall now. It will be years before they grow big enough.

Oakslesly -- Check the ph of your soil and water, and see what rootstock Palatine is using these days. If, like most of Ventura Co., your conditions are alkaline, Multiflora is not the best rootstock for you.

You don't say where you are. Chamblees is good for us, but I don't know if the shipping is the same for everyone. We are only about 6 hours away from them.

I hear few complaints if any about these nurseries.- Chamblees, ARE, and Ashdown. Others from California charge too much for shipping for me.

I love Ashdown. Great product, well packaged, but as important is their personal service - a real person on the phone. I ordered last year, and I ordered again for this spring.
I have an order from Heirloom, too, this spring. Again, great phone service, but I haven't seen the rose yet. I felt ok ordering from them because of the positive comments here.

I don't think you can beat the selection of Buck roses at Chamblees. I have ordered from them in the past, and I was very pleased with what I received.

Ashdown is in SC and Countryside Roses in MS. I'm jealous...

You know....when you move to SC that you will be within driving distance to both Ashdown Roses and Roses Unlimited. You can get to either in under 2 hours. I visit both each year and its just like being a kid in a candy store. And you save on shipping that way too!

Greyhounds, where in Michigan and how soon are you going? And are you going to be able to make a trip back here to Michigan?

Great Lakes Roses near Belleville (Ann Arbor area) has a fabulous selection of own-root roses -- moderns, antiques and Bucks. If you ever make it to the Eastern Market flower day in Detroit, they're there, too, and will bring your roses (AND give you a discounted price!). Nancy and Roger are wonderful people; very helpful, and I'm sure would work with you on the times if you told them the circumstances. Maybe this is an option for you?

One caveat: Reserve what you want now. I called in about a month ago for a gallica and they had only a couple left.

Sorry, I should clarify: Great Lakes Roses doesn't do mail order, but if you're close by (or don't mind the trip), it may be an option for you...

You'll discover many new names among the roses listed by Roses Unlimited, Ashdown, and Countryside Roses as the roses that do well in the south are not the same as up north. You'll no longer need to consider winter-hardiness, but you will find that some of your old favorites may get BS like crazy where they never did for you up there. We're planning to move to SC in a couple years, where are moving? Riverbanks in Columbia and Edisto Memorial have gardens that I plan to go see this summer. It's a drive, but there's also a terrific municipal rose garden in Wilson, NC. From a former Buckeye all I can say is...c'mon down the weather's FINE!
