Here is what I've observed so far for these ones:

Double Delight 4'x3'
Reine de Violettes 4'x3' (potential - mine isn't filling out very quickly......)
Christopher Marlowe 3'x2'
Crocus Rose 4'x3'
Heritage 5.5'x3'
Sharifa Asma 3'x2'
Linda Campbell 5'x6' very bushy and filled out by 2nd season
Stanwell Perpetual 3'x5'

Most of these roses I've had for 2-3 years so it's too early to say if the heights listed will be their mature height. Also these heights are just a guess by looking out the window. We still have snow so I won't be going around with a tape measure any time soon... :-)

Btw that is a very nice list!!

I grow Double Delight and Mr. Lincoln in my client's garden and they perform as typical HTs here--killed to ground level (despite protection) and one year Mr. Lincoln never recovered from a fairly mild winter and died (I replaced with another). If they live after the first year, I would expect them to get about 3' tall and not very wide.

Of the Austins you list, Brother Cadfael is one of the hardiest English roses for me, hardy nearly to the tips each year and very beautiful, my favorite rose. I grow Crocus Rose in a public garden and it seems quite hardy too, really grew a lot in its first year and could easily be 4' x 4', more if not pruned. Bro. Cadfael is a little shorter and has matured to about 3-4' x 3'(except for the occasinal octopus cane he throws out).

Cr. Princess Margareta and Chris Marlowe are going into their 3rd year and are no more than 3' high x 2-2 1/2' wide. Sharifa and Heritage are similiar in growth, about 4' tall x 3' wide. Spirit of Freedom is 4 years old and grows a bit wider, I would say 3-4' tall x 4' wide.

Just my experience, a bit warmer than you. I don't know about the others, have some of them but just planted last year so I have to wait and see. All of my grafted roses are planted with the bud union about 6" deep. I don't winter-protect (except client's HTs) so if you do provide protection you will probably have similiar results as me.

Thanks so much for the info as our locations are quite similar. I was surprised to see that Double delight gave you that kind of height, that is encouraging.

Linda Campbell... very glad to see that she matures quickly.

Thanks for the comment on the list, i'm not surprised you agree as recommendations by Krista and yourself were a big influence in finalizing my list.

Thanks for the info, the HT's were chosen for DH and my original plan was to put them in pots. I still haven't made a final decision but have read of many cold zoners who are growing DD in the ground successfully. ML seems to be more tender though so I am still not sure weather he will go in the ground or in a pot. I know they will die back to the ground and that is not a problem.

The potted collection lives in the garage over winter. However I am trying to move the one's that can handle it into the ground to free up the pots for even more tender varieties like HP's & china's.

I do use pretty extensive winter protection methods overall. It is the only option if you want to grow more than just explorer's and rugosa's up here.

Reine des Violettes was new for me last spring, but it had two five foot canes by the fall. I expect it to be fairly large. I'm not sure how much of it survived this winter though as I haven't done any pruning yet and it wasn't obvious what was live wood when I looked at it. I'm happy to hear that Double Delight gets to 4' by 3' in Minneapolis. Mine was new last year and was only 2' to 3' tall.

That's an interesting list - sorry I can comment personally on so few, but in the end your experience will probably be like nobody else's, so you'll be doing what we all do - winging it - LOL! Oh well, there are worse things in life than having to move a rose.

Double Delight - I have several in the ground, own root and grafted both. Grafted grows larger - 3.5x3.5 usually. I'd save the pot for another needy rose and plant DD out.

Ferdinand Pichard - 4'x3' & I don't have him anymore. I gave him away because there was something about his stripes I really didn't like. (Just me, not anything against this rose.)

Reine de Violettes - Mine is still quite new, too, but I'm expecting it somewhere in the 4' height range. I'm not sure how the width will work out there.

Heritage - here's a rose that can bounce back from total cane loss over winter and then some! In a good year with the proper water, fertilizer and disease control I have had Heritage blast up to 5'x 4'!! Many years it is a more demure 4x3' size.

Great Maidens Blush - One of those lovely "vase shaped" shrubs that lend so much grace to the garden. Mine is young yet and only about 5x3'

Mme Isaac Pereire - a narrow, tall and lanky grower for sure. This one needs a support (oblisk or tutour?) or pegging. It never manages to have cane survive over winter so it is always starting over.

Rose de Rescht - short, short, short. That's 2.5 ft. tall here, maybe 3' in a shadier spot where it's stretching a bit for the sun. But watch out! If yours is own root like mine, it will be suckering zealously. Don't plant it where you would have problems digging out the volunteers - which BTW, can appear more than 5' away from the original plant!

Stanwell Perpetual - takes 4 years at least to build itself into the mounding shrub it wants to be so don't be fooled by early growth! It eventually settles into a 4' tall by 4 or 5' diameter plant so this is one to give lots of real estate.

Wow thanks so much for the info, not only for the size estimates but also for the descriptions, it really helps me to visualize where each of them would look the best.

I don't mind winging it and moving them around is not a problem either. Well usually...lol. I have the perfect spot for Linda Cambell, problem is I have Rugosa Turbo in that spot right now. I bought Turbo on a whim last spring not knowing anything about it as I had truly never seen such a "beasty" rose still in a pot. I just had to bring it home and see what it became. Anyway, i discovered later that it appears rather rare and hard to get. I am hesitant to move it in case I lose it. It really did earn a soft spot in my heart last summer. Oh well, something to ponder as the snow takes forever to melt.

After seeing your description of Heritage I am even more excited to see it planted...can't wait...

GMB, love your description, and if yours is young still and has so far made 5x3 it is going to work perfectly for the spot I have in mind.

Think I will try MIP up against the house on the east side. Can give her support and will be well protected. My RdR will be grafted but I will factor in the propensity to sucker.

We are a bit warmer than you. Double Delight is the only one we grow here. The reason I am mentioning anything is our 2 DDs get different amounts of sun. The one (planted 1997) that gets 7 hours of sun gets 4 x 4. The one planted in 2000 gets around 11 hours. That DD gets 5 x 5 and foliage is thicker. They both bloom like crazy but the one with more sun wins that contest too. DD seems to love the sun.

I am also in the Twin cities. Size depends on a lot of things, but I would say how you winter-protect them, whether they are grafted onto vigorous rootstock, and if you have rabbits in your yard are the biggest factors for size.

Rabbits eat my all mid-sized roses to the snowline.

Mine are own-root and not winter-protected other than woodchip mulch and snow)

Reine de Violettes (fairly hardy. A vase-shaped five footer. It can throw very long canes)

Crocus Rose (dies to the snowline, but hardy otherwise. Three feet by mid-summer)

Heritage (dies to the snowline. 4-5 feet by midsummer)

Banshee (huge, suckering rose. 10X10 feet. I had to take it out.I miscalculated the size)

R. Rugosa Alba (5-6 feet. No winter damage. Suckers)

Roseraie de lÂHay (6 feet. No winter damage. Also suckers)

Mme Isaac Pereire (not hardy at all. Died for me)

Rose de Rescht ( three feet. Mostly hardy. Some suckering)

Felicia (not hardy at all. Died)

Lavender Lassie (not hardy, but survives if laid along the ground and covered with mulch. Four feet for me. I am unimpressed with this rose)

Stanwell Perpetual (3 feet of sparse canes. No damage)

Reine de Violettes will throw 7'+ long canes but they are not upright and will train growing across. It will grow 5' wide. I have a corner fence on it and it will go probably 3' or more each direction along my fence. I let it get about 6' wide going two directions. It is very hardy. I don't cover it.

Mr Lincoln 5' - 6' high upright growth by late fall in its 3rd year. Allow for 3' width on a healthy plant.

I had Linda Campbell but lost her to Rose Rosette two years ago. She is about 4' high and 4' around. When I learned I had bought a rugosa after the purchase I didn't think I'd like it, but its blood red color is really nice and it gets a lot of red roses for a colorful display. It may well get wider than I described as that is the nature of the rugosa beast; you must try to tame a rugosa. As far as rugosas go, this is fairly well domesticated specimen. You'll like it.

It's a bit colder here. My Heritage died over winter last year. I didn't even get to see one bloom!!!

Brother Cadfael is wonderfully hardy. I planted the graft about 4" deep and winter protected it with dirt and loose garden material. It grows to about 3 feet by 2 1/2. I love this rose!!!

Dave - glad to hear that DD loves the sun, now that I know that I have just the spot in mind.

Dr A - I am north of the twin cities but quite urban so no bunnies to be concerned with thankfully, just a big goofy lab/husky cross that will plow through anything to chase a chipmunk. Mine will all be grafted and the more tender one's heavily protected. Thank you so much for the detailed info in your response.

Mark - A corner fence sounds lovely for your RdV, something to ponder as I could re think the location on this one. I never imagined Mr Lincoln would get that tall up north, that is certainly impressive. Loved the comment about L. Campbell being a well domesticated rugosa. They are a tad unruly aren't they but for the cold areas they seem to be our "backbone roses"

Carol - bummer that you lost Heritage before even seeing it bloom. Glad to hear Brother Cadfael performs well. He made it on to the order list because of such a good rep for hardiness.
