Giving up on WH, so what else is there?

I am giving up on the WH this year. Not sure I will try next spring either. I have tried everything and nothing has worked. Even parrots feathers haven't done anything either, and I love the way they look. WL is out as full sun melts them. I will be trying water lilies and maybe a lotus next year, but until then:

What are some other plants I can try to grow that are good at using up nutients? I have 3 taros and 2 dwarf papyrus at the pond edges that are growing okay. But, I'd really love to have plants that will spread out over the water from the edges or I may build a floating island. What will do well on an island, keeping in mind, that I am in full all day sun and in temps that usually run into the 90s and 100s for most of our summers? Also, what plants will survive the winters in the ponds in zone 7?

Thanks in advance and in desperation,

Vickie
