More Blast from the Past! OGR Conference -- France 2007

I'm finally getting around to scanning and posting slides of more old rose events (double meaning intended -- old events about roses and events about old roses). So here is the conference at Chaalis, near Senlis, France, in the summer of '07.

Thanks, Malcolm. I envy you the visit to Andre Eve's nursery and private garden. Wow. Also the Bagatelle judging, complete with champagne.

I was very lucky to be able to attend the conference myself, and have some photos on my Picasa album of the Day of the Rose at Chaalis before the conference began, and of Prof Joyaux's gallica collection in Commer. I broke my camera during the conference so it's nice to see your photos, Malcolm - I didn't get very many.

It was fun to see a photo of me, Sherri and Judy. I had to laugh at photos of Betty under a drippy umbrella - is it ALWAYS raining when she's visiting gardens?

It certainly should whet appetites for the conference in Lyon. Are you planning to go, Malcolm? I will have to miss it --

Anita, I don't see any photos at that link. Do I have to register with Picassa to see them?

Yes, I plan to go to Lyon. I'm all registered and booked! Glad I've got my air tickets, since it sounds like they're about to get expensive, with the increased price of fuel.

I'm realizing there are now two threads about this on here. Sorry about that. Shall we let the other one die?

Thanks Jeri for the name of that purple rose, Starbucks would be nice on a cart, scones and coffee. Lux Jeri, After attending the Old Rose Celebration for several years ( I live within 7 miles of Moeser Lane) I've noticed that all the remontant O.G.R's are pretty much all sold within one hour of opening. In 2012 I took a complete inventory that showed this was true, by running around and writing down the; -number of every pot of rose, by class name - still available for sale -at every vendor. -at noon. I believe more Old Garden Roses would be sold, and the buying public would be happy, if vendors increased by c. 25% the remontant O.G.R.s they bring for sale. In 2012 at 12:15 P.M the only remontant Old Rose left was a 'Marie Pavie' that I bought, and at the same tabe there were several assorted bands of Hybrid Musk cultivars, , and, at the vintage gardens table, dozens of bands of H.T.s and Florries, and several L.F.C's , There were more than a dozen cultivars of Ramblers which remained on the vintage gardens table when I left around 3 p.m.. One vendor near the entrance had several gallon pots of a modern Florabunda available at 3.p.m. as well. I believe this shows that it is the remontant Old Garden Roses that sell best, at this event. Getting there early will not solve the issue, as there is a limited number of remontant O.G.R.s to be bought, the vendors need to increase their inventory of remontant classes of O.G.R.s at the Old Rose Celebration. . I hope my efforts do some good. If you'd like to pass on this information, to anyone who could make a difference I'd be so grateful. I took the inventories because I have an interest in the promotion of Old Garden Roses If I were a vendor I'd increase the number of pots of remontant Old Garden Roses by 20 % to 25% this year. "Rick, are you saying U.S. roses can't be taken across the border into Canada?" Kate and Carol; you can import roses from the U.S., but an international phytosanitary certificate is required for the shipment. Currently, only Rogue Valley Roses and David Austin Roses USA will ship to Canada. I have contacted both Heirloom Roses and Roses Unlimited and neither are willing to ship roses to Canada. It is a lot of work and hassle and then shipments sometimes experience delays at the border that have cost me young plants in the past. I suspect that the extra work and effort required is prohibitively costly for small nurseries who may only get a few export orders a year. I did import eight roses from RVR this spring, seven survived and are doing well in my nursery bed. But RVR doesn't carry Braveheart. There are far more European nurseries that will ship to Canada, or the U.S. for that matter, than American nurseries who will export. The Europeans are more accustomed to shipping across borders in the E.U. But both an import permit and phyto are required for import of roses from the E.U. and it is costly and risky both.

Whoever said that Carding Mill would be 3 feet wide must be living in northern Canada! I didn't have mine that long (wrong color) but it was getting to be double that at an early age. I've underestimated the size of most of my roses and the ones in my "tea rose row" are already hugging each other desperately. It will only get worse but there isn't a single one I could bear to get rid of and there's no more space. Of course two more are coming in the spring, roses imported from France by Vintage Gardens. People who love roses, especially the old ones that mostly tend to be on the large side, are always going to have overcrowding. If it's the worst problem we're ever going to have we're pretty lucky! ilovemyroses, your last sentence so resonated with me. That's what it's all about, that feeling of joy when you look at your beautiful garden filled with roses.

Thanks everyone! I love the rose photos! Re: OGR's in Texas........I have pretty much, to this point, always stuck with all the roses (and other plants) that will do well in this region (who wants to waste money and time trying to nurture a "fish out of water"!). I have on order a lot of those regional roses. There are several OGR's/Gallica's that I have seen listed as growing here (whatever that means!): La Belle Sultane, Marquise Bocella, Charles de Mills and Canary Island Gallica. Several of these are available from The Antique Rose Emporium, which I take to mean that they will at least do well somewhere in Texas! I am going to try a couple and see how they do. And since I'm feeling adventurous and energetic, I'm also going to push the limit and try Cardinal de Richelieu; I just can't resist the unusual color blooms.......I hope I won't be sorry come mid-summer, when my adventurous, energetic spirit has died with the heat and I am still having to baby it/them along :)

When you click on the link to the 2007 photos, make sure you are sitting down and have a half-hour to enjoy yourself. Andre Eve's private garden is one of the loveliest gardens I have ever seen, and the grounds of the public nursery are almost as spectacular. Thank you, Mr. Manners, for taking the time to share such beauty with us.

Malcolm, thank you for the most incredibly enjoyable treat I've had in a long time in looking at these marvelous photographs. The rose gardens are all spectacular, with for me Andre Eve's nursery and private garden being the most inspiring and incredibly beautiful. Even the formal gardens with their long, calm vistas were a very effective counterpoint. I'm so grateful you took the time to offer this wonderful series of photos to us.

Ok Another "blast!"

In the hope of encouraging/enticing more of us to go to Lyon for the upcoming HRF conference (June 19-21, 2011), I've posted photos from the 1999 8th International Conference on Old Roses, that was held in Lyon. Enjoy!

After viewing the Lyon slides I'm again amazed and impressed at how well the French grow roses. We hear so much more about English rose gardens but very rarely about the French except for a few of the biggest. Obviously there are areas in France where roses do exceptionally well. I'm also impressed at how meticulously everything is kept.
