Gray Dogwood & Spicebush

I read that both of these species require warm then cold periods. My question is this: Since the seeds cannot be stored dry and need both periods, can I start them indoors in potting soil and then move the soil outside in the winter or will the seeds rot? I could also plant them outside in the place they will ultimately go, but I have not too many seeds and so I am wondering which method would likely produce the most plants.
