pruning kolkwitzia

I think what I've got in my garden is a kolkwitzia. At least, it appears to match some photos I've found on the internet. The only book I have that discusses care of this shrub describes it as lanky, sprawling and untidy, all of which are pretty much true of my plant, though I don't generally mind shrubs with messy hair. The book also suggests that I should "cut back one third of old growth annually."

What does this mean? I should cut one third of the older canes to the ground each year - the way you might do to rejuvenate a lilac? Or I should cut all canes back by one third of their length each year?

I am not sure I'm going to prune it at all, but I'd like to do it right, if I do. It is just now finishing flowering.
