Horned Melon & Cucumber seeds

Hi, my name is Daniel, I'm 19 years old and new to gardening! In fact, I'm so ignorant on the subject, I don't even know all the correct terms for everything! Well I don't really know what I know actually haha. Well let me continue on with my questions.

I recently purchased a Horned Melon, aka Kiwano, and Cucumber. I ate most of the Kiwano and Cucumber, but saved some seeds. I took the casing off of them, let them dry for a while, and planted them in some potting soil mixed with dirt from my backyard.

However, I just recently read that most people let the Kiwano rot for up to a YEAR before planting the seeds! Will/Can my seeds still grow? It's been about a week and I see nothing yet, how long does it take, and how much water does it need?

Horned mellon germination 6-10 days. only about 30% of seed will ever germinate. Cucumber 5-24 days to germinate. water requirements keep soil damp not wet.
usually planted direct in area where to be grown the following spring after dry storage not roting

Hey, me again! I guess I got lucky because out of the 8 seeds I planted, 3 are sprouting up! I wasn't sure because it didn't look like what I thought, but I found a picture of one sprouting up, and that's exactly what I've got growing.

By the way, what is dry storage? I could easily look it up I suppose..but you guys answer it better.

Ate my first Horned Melon!

I see this is an old post but I'd love to know what kind of horned melon Rose had because mine are just nasty! Not only do you take your life into your hands risking serious puncture wounds picking the darned things but they have no taste and are not much more them a gelatinous mess inside. Is there anything that can be done with this fruit? I must have 50 of them and would have more but I got sick of looking at the vines creeping over anything within reach. These vines took up more space then a pumpkin and even started crawling up the brick on the side of my house. That was after they went up and over an azalea hedge! I'll never grow this again but I guess you could tell that from the tone of my post. lol Karyn

Hi Kenny, Were the seeds inside the melon dry? They should of been surrounded by gucky stuff just like other melon seeds. If they were dry perhaps the melon was quite old and the seeds were ready to sprout? Normally, you remove the seeds and the guck together, put in a small container to ferment only adding only a touch of water of you meed to to make sure they are covered. If there's no guck and pretty much only water, the mechanism in the seeds to sprout may take over as is what happened to you. Remy

Is is already really overripe? If so being in the fridge is ok. Cucumber seeds should be fermented like tomato seeds. The good ones will be fat and not bendy. I've not really paid attention when saving cucumber seeds, but before fermenting, they might float even if good since they have the gel around them. Remy
