Most of the tomatoes at the grocery store are not worth growing, the exception are the grape tomatoes, which, although hybrids, I hear grow out pretty close to the parents and taste much better home grown. If you can find Jeruselem artichokes = sunchokes they should grow from the tubers (look like ginger, taste like sweet jicima). Onions will not grow into anything edible, and even if you grew them out to set seed, growing onions from seed is a pain. I don't think you could get celery to root, and if you did, you couldn't do anything with it. Pineapple is a fun plant to grow, but you can't do much with it. little bitty garlic cloves that are too bothersome to peel, collect them in a container, and then stick in the dirt instead. lemongrass, root in water seeds from longan, lychee, etc.... plant all the seeds and create a bonsai forest with them! i'm in the process of doing this right now. I grew a 20ft pear tree from a seed at the asian market! it was a ya li pear that I ate and the seed already had a root coming out, i stuck it in the dirt. The tree fruited 5 years later and it was a regular green, roundish and hard (but yummy) fruit, the kind you peel and dip in nuoc mam and sugar and chili sauce. I also took a tiny cutting fiver years ago from a meyer lemon and now have a huge 6 ft bush with tons of lemons

The issue is are they hybrids or heirlooms/open pollinated varieties. If they are hybrids then the seeds you save won't breed true. Hybrid seeds in the packet are the result of manual cross-pollination of at least 2 parent varieties. The seeds saved from those hybrid plants once grown, will revert to the parent stock or some strange combination of them. If your seeds planted and grown are heirlooms or open-pollinated plants, not hybrids, then yes you can save the seeds and re-grow them. Depending on what the plant is - self-fertile like tomatoes or insect pollinated like most flowers, they may or may not grow true. In some cases, like hollyhocks you will still get lots cross-pollination by insects so your saved seeds may change color etc. It all depends on how much you care whether or not the seeds you saved breed true or not. Usually, fruit trees are not grown from seed for the following reasons: 1. The tree resulting from the seed will not be the exact same cultivar as its parents, and the fruit will often be inferior. Whenever plants are propagated through sexual reproduction, it's the luck of the draw as far as what genes the offspring gets. That's why fruit trees are almost always asexually propagated from cuttings. 2. It takes a long time to grow a tree from a tiny seed 3. Most fruit trees are grafted onto different rootstock (of a different cultivar or very similar species). This allows the tree to began producing fruit much early in its life. It may start producing at 3 years instead of 10 years like it would growing in the wild. By stunting the tree's growth a little bit, more of the energy will be diverted towards fruit production. That being said, growing fruit from seed can be fun if you have the patience to wait 10 years. You could end up with a new variety. It's cheap and easy to grow from seed, but you will likely put a lot of time investment into the tree only to find out that the fruits don't taste as good. One more problem is that most of the fruit varieties sold at the supermarket may not be the best tasting varieties; rather they are the varieties that last longer during shipping and don't bruise. So flavor is sacrificed. If you plant a fruit tree yourself, it may not be the best idea to plant the same name variety you see in the supermarket. Do some research. All these reasons are why it is usually better to buy a fruit tree than grow from seed.
