Cryogenic Seed Banks & Global Seed Vault

This is something I just became aware of via the boob tube and was ignorant of till now.

The Norwegian Government is aparently footing most of the bill to build a 'Doomsday' Seed Vault to store agricultural and food seeds on Spitzbergen in the Svalbard island group. The permafrost will keep the seeds at a very low temp and preserve them so that they are available to replenish food crops in the event of some global disaster that may wipe out all existing forms of those plants.

Also of interest is the National Seed Storage Lab Preservation Unit in Ft. Collins, Colorado, USA. Here, they cryogenically freeze seeds in liquid nitrogen to preserve them for later recovery if necessary. See Link below.

Apparently, we have reason to be nervous. There are over 1400 seed banks around the world with many of them being implemented by National Governments. The Spitzbergen facility which is new, is said to be specifically for 'Doomsday' preservation.

From what I can tell, you won't find Gardenia seeds in these seed banks. Only food crop or agricultural seeds.

If you're a Banana or a Palm Tree, you're in. If you're a Rose, too bad.

It's kinda like who gets on that rocket ship in the movie "When Worlds Collide".
