I have the variegated weigelia, which I love. I have never deadheaded it, and only get one fantastic flush of bloom. These also root very easily. This shot I took yesterday, and its already going downhill after the flush of bloom.SO its not at its finest.

Looks like I might be wrong. According to the following site, mine is supposed to bloom again in the fall. It never has tho, but I dont prune. This may need some more looking into.

Thanks Ken and Tammy. I obviously am new to gardening and have a lot to learn. Weather cooperating I am planting two varigated Weigela today. Looks like they might compliment the Wine 'n Roses nicely. Then its off to weeding. Thanks again.

It depends on the reason you wish to deadhead. If you want to redirect energy from seed/fruit/cone production to root/shoot production, say on a young conifer it makes sense to remove the cones. The plant will not be able to 'waste' energy on seeds that you may not need. It is primary biology. i doubt your weigelia produces many seeds, so save the effort, and no need to thin cones off of a 50 foot spruce, but if a young tree or shrub has produced an abundance of blooms or seed/fruit, than by all means remove some or all. The tree will thrive rather than reproduce.

I have 4 wine & roses wigela and deadhead them to great effect. The second bloom is just arriving here in the Hudson Valley. Yes, it can be quite tedious given how many flowers wigelas produce, but, like weeding, deadheading can also be weirdly satisfying. Am not aware of any rule against deadheading shrubs. Climbing roses are technically are shrubs and I deadhead mine to get a second bloom. They are healthier and handsomer as a result.
