new 5-9-2013 rose rosette article - Hudson Valley New York
Comments (5)The following comment was made: "And we don't know of any immune response to RRV except maybe in certain species, do we?" -------------------------------------- I would definitely expect an immune response to mite attack. I also would expect an immune response (from very weak to complete immunity) to rose rosette virus which would vary in effectiveness depending on which variety, possibly temperature, possibly general health of the plant, possibly time in growing season, and other still unknown factors. We do know of three examples of unexpected behavior. One is that graft transfers of the virus in multiflora are not successful after a certain date. A second is for one species of rose the virus can go down one cane but does not go up other canes. A third is that 20% or in some cases more of infected roses appear to cure themselve (go into remission) but then the disease returns (have a relapse). "Q: Is the virus present in non-symptomatic tissue [on plants known to have been symptomatic]? It can be. We have seen about 20 percent of newly symptomatic roses, lose all trace of symptoms. However, the symptoms always return and usually cover most of the plant. The plant then usually dies a few months later." http://www.rosebreeders.org/forum/read.php?2,50305,50308#msg-50308 If the hydrogen peroxide treatment does work, it would be expected to word by enhancing the immune response. The 2012 review article for which I have included the quote below may be of interest. "Plants, however, lack specialized mobile immune cells. Instead, every plant cell is thought to be capable of launching an effective immune response. So how do plants achieve specific, self-tolerant immunity and establish immune memory? Recent developments point towards a multilayered plant innate immune system comprised of self-surveillance, systemic signalling and chromosomal changes that together establish effective immunity." Comments (6)Hi Laurie, My Mom had this rose out in the country, definite zone 2b. Anyways, I think 2 feet is the most it got in height, probably less. It was around 2 feet wide as well, though I can see how with age it would sprawl out more, depending on trimming and such. Glen...See MoreWinter Madness, "seasonal thread" Part 4
Comments (164)Jim, please go ahead and start a spring thread when you have time. We appreciate all you have done keeping the seasonal threads going and making them lots of fun. Love all your crazy photos, too. I only worked 1 hr and 10 minutes. Too many interruptions, plus sore knees from crawling along on pavement, cleaning out the beds that border sidewalks. The whirligig is going so fast in the breeze I'll never get a pic of the thing. That cat really knows how to ride a bicycle. Diane...See MoreRoses Unlimited summer sale 6/10 to 6/23 at $14 per gallon
Comments (41)Straw - you seem to be able to overwinter more roses than I can in my zone 5 with your better snow cover, but in my experience Lemon Spice is not remotely hardy and I can't pull it through in my most protected spot. I had one Firefighter that I kept for several years but I have had trouble overwintering a replacement. Still I'd rate that one as much more robust than Lemon Spice in my yard. For the others, GFT is rock solid hardy and a good bloomer, Stephen's Big Purple has survived in my protected area, America didn't survive but it was a body bag, Danae won't survive my winters, and Moonlight Romantica is on its third try to survive my winters. Just my experience with these - you know that I'm no help on scent as I can't smell most roses. Cynthia...See Morejim1961 / Central Pennsylvania / Zone 6
