hi all,

Just wondering if anyone uses any type of computer software to manage their seeds and planting and so on?

I ve heard of a shareware one called "Seed Program" but it seems to be mostly for vegetables..

Howdy,

I ran across this link for seed and planting management software. I haven't used it but it looks like a well designed program. It can be used for any type of plants since you can add your own to the program's database. Hope it's like what you are looking for.

I just use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of my seeds. What exactly are you looking for?

With a spreadsheet such as excell you can sort by any column grouping so if you have enough groupings the entry of data can be put at the bottom and then sorted into place. I CROP GROUP my veg. seeds by the same containers that I store them. Alliums are stored in the freezer; beans and peas;cole crops; corn;cucumbers&melons; greens&root crops;herbs; peppers&eggplant; pumpkins&squash;tomatoes;ornamentals&flowers. My next heading is CROP TYPE(eg.beans); then CROP SUBTYPE (eg.green,yellow,italian); VARIETY NAME; SUPPLIER;SEED AMOUNT; UNIT(M,lb.,oz.);PURCHASE DATE; NOTES(poor germ, order more,etc.). I usually start a new inventory every January by printing out last year's inventory, then going thru all my seed lots to correct the seed amount column and put a check in the note column to show I found it. I don't open seed packs so I only estimate seed numbers in most cases. Most of my seeds for this year have arrived so I now will update the inventory. It is most helpful when you head out to plant and again when you are harvesting and you need to know more about where and when you got the seeds. If you can quickly see the source you can look in the catelog for more discriptive info.

Hey seamommy! I'm not an o/c sicko and I doubt you are, either :) I'm what most of my friends and family call "super-organized" (with a roll of their eyes). Part of it is my love of order and dislike of chaos, but part comes from years of training in the science field. Scientists (and those who work for them) have to be listmakers, obsessive record-keepers, and they are usually short on funding so knowing what you have and what you need is crucial. Yes, I'm guilty of the spreadsheets, the lists, the garden plans, a garden journal, and a garden/home/yard "idea" book. Sorry to scare you, Diana ;) It really helps to keep my gardening in perspective, though. It's great to be able to look back a year or two to see what worked well, what didn't. Also, inventory helps me to prevent excessive seed purchasing - sometimes;) I've been keeping a garden journal since 1994. The past few years have lots of family/general interst entries, too. I tried keeping a separate personal journal, but wasn't very faithful, so I just do it all in one now. In winter, I record temperature, snowfall, birds I see at the feeders, animals I see around, etc. Summer is much the same, but also records of planting dates, harvest dates, etc. I also have garden photoalbums (heehee). My adult kids have new mac products that do all the things you ask about and more. They are so easy to use I wonder why people buy anything else...well, except for price. When I play with their computers I realize that I would love a new one. My iMac is from before the turn of the century; it's the devil I know, and as an old dinosaur myself, I am content with its stoneage capabilities. Old as it is it does great stuff with photos, Quicken, disc burning, etc. I do envy you, though, with your brand new machine. You're going to have a lot of fun with it. Welcome to the club! Sherry

Thanks for the link...I ll check out this program.

I use an excel sheet now as well..this is my first year gardening.

For next year I have a wide variety of seeds to start, each needing different conditions and so on.

I was looking for a database program where culture info was on file and basically you just enter in your frost dates and it comes up with a schedule detailing when to start everything, when to prick them out and so on. It would produce a calendar schedule and even send reminders via email!

This is what the seed program I found does but it only has a few veggies in its database...perhaps its for farmers..

I was sure that there would be a program similar to that for home gardeners! Maybe not. Surprising though.

sewobsessed: I love that site, thanks so much! Sunita, I just use an excel sheet too. I also use cue cards. On each card, I put down the name I know it as, the Chinese name (for my parents) and the latin name. I record the numbre of days it took to sprout for me and the date I started them, and I paste the information about growing (if it's from a commercial packatge) on the back I organize them by using a cue card box and special dividers made for them
